He didn’t tell me where we were going, he simply kidnapped me from my home around 8PM and drove me away. I didn’t ask questions either because I knew I was in good hands. Hours later we ended up at the beach, the smell so familiar yet so displeasuring.

“Sho?” I whispered, looking over at him. He was hunched over the steering wheel, tears rushing down his cheeks. “Sho?” I repeated, placing a hand on his shoulder.

“You said you wanted to go on a vacation with just the two of us, right?” he said tearfully.

“I did, but not at night and not when you’re like this,” I said turning to him. He sniffed and wiped his eyes before getting out the car. I quickly followed him, wrapping my sweater even tighter around myself to shield my body from the cool night breeze. Sho was standing in the sand, hands in his pockets staring at the black water. Usually it was a peaceful sight, but at night it was like staring into a dark abyss.

I got behind him and wrapped my arms around him, resting my head on his back. He was trembling from his tears, unable to stop himself from crying louder. His body soon collapsed, mine following behind him.

I hated when I didn’t know what to say to him, I hated feeling this useless. Nothing I could say would make him feel better, nothing I said would stop his heart from breaking.

“Nino let go,” he whimpered. I shook my head against his back, tightening my grip. “Seriously Nino, stop,’ he said in a more forceful voice. I let go immediately and he moved away from me.

“It finally happened?” I asked. Sho nodded, pulling his knees to his chest.

“He said we would grow old together, that we’d get go to America and get married. He said that we would buy a home on the beach and raise a small family, even though I knew he wasn’t too keen on kids,” Sho said with a pained smile. “He lied,” he whispered.

“No he didn’t.”

“Then why did he promise me all that and still leave me?” Sho countered. We all knew of Jun and Sho’s relationship and we all saw how head over heels Sho was about the man which is why it pains me to see him like this.

“Things happen in life. Things you can make happen and things you do not see coming,” I said slowly. “No one saw it coming,” I whispered.

We sat in silence, sharing thoughts on Jun, sharing thoughts on what it was like all together; all five of us. A single tear slipped pass my eyes, which I quickly wiped. How long will it be until everything feels fine again? How long will it be until Sho won’t curl up into a ball and cry his eyes out anymore? How long will it take until I confess to him?

It had been two years since the accident that took him away from us. It was a complete and utter accident, no one was at fault, which made it even harder to accept. There was no one for us to displace our anger upon. We just had to accept that he was no longer with us. When the news got out, we all wanted to call bullshit; we all wanted to yell at the stations for slander, for lies, but when we saw him with our own eyes…

I looked over at Sho, who was staring at the water. His eyes were dead, he was simply too tired; physically and emotionally.

“Sho, want to go back?”

“No,” his raspy voice said firmly. “He said we were going to come here today,” he continued. I looked at the time and it was thirty minutes to midnight; thirty minutes to their five year anniversary. Every year they came here when it hit midnight. For three years they managed to keep this tradition.

“What did you have planned?” I asked.

“Probably a barbeque,” he sniffed. “You know how much he loves those.” When he turned to me, the moonlight hit his face almost in the perfect way.

“He did, didn’t he,” I smiled. Sho nodded and wiped his eyes with the back of his hand.

The clock was ticking and we were still sitting in silence. When there was a minute left, I took Sho’s hands and pulled him up. He looked at me a bit confused and I gave him a small smile.

“Ten…nine…eight…seven…six…five…four…three…two…” I said slowly, counting down the time.

“One,” he sighed. I wrapped by arms around his neck.

“He wouldn’t want you like this. He would get mad at you, right? You know how scary Jun-kun is when he’s mad,” I joked lightly. Sho nodded, laughing tearfully. I kept my hold on him, waiting until his breathing evened out. “If you don’t mind, I would like to keep his promise,” I whispered. Sho leaned back and stared into my eyes.

“What?” his voice rasped.

“I want to keep Jun’s promises to you; all of them. Even the bit about kids,” I said a bit more confidently. Sho was blankly staring at me before he pulled me in for a hug. I wasn’t sure if this was an acceptance or a rejection, but I took it.

“Where would I be without you Kazu?” he whispered in my hair.

“Somewhere where I couldn’t follow.”

When we pulled apart again, I took his hand and brought him back to the car; this time taking the wheel for myself. Once we got on the road again, his eyes drifted to sleep and I prayed for the millionth time, in two years, for him to sleep peacefully.
