[TM] 236 - What Does Respect Mean To You?

Jun 30, 2008 09:06

Well, there’s a real simple answer to that question, silly: thought. Consideration. Making the effort to think about someone or something...that’s what respect is. To me, anyway...gotta make that distinction. When you’re talking about something like this, you have to make an effort to keep your point clear, because it’s real easy to sort of impose your will without meaning to...this is what respect is rather than this is what I believe respect is. See what I mean?

Anyway...think about it. Really think about it...when you go through your day and you’re considering how your actions are affecting others, what do you do? You go “oh crap, better not do that, Joe Frankfurt will get pissed.” You’re not worrying about the loser you hope takes that long walk off a short pier, and you’re not worried about bothering your evil ex who you caught in bed with two other women. You’re worried about dissing your parents, or putting out a friend.

You think about the people you love and respect. You don’t give a thought to the rest.

That’s why I always try to be considerate of other people...I count them, even if they’re total strangers. I mean...if you haven’t hurt me, I have no reason to disrespect you, and every reason to count your life, and your feelings. That’s how I respect people...I think of them. I use a little normal human effort to think about the people around me, and in return? That’s all I expect from them. I don’t expect a bunch of kowtowing or butt-kissing from people, just that they think of me. And if they do? It’s on them...and they obviously thought enough of me to show some display of respect.

I mock them, of course, for brown-nosing and whatnot...but I mock them with love, because they thought of me. And that’s all I ever ask of anyone.
