INKBLOT

“It’s a butterfly...or an elemental.”

“An elemental?”

Rian nodded, handing the inkblot card back to the doctor. “Mmm-hmm, yep! An air elemental, specifically. I got really good at summoning them for a while when I was still rocking the Superwicca-ness.”

She watched, waited, and was annoyed as her therapist scribbled something down on his pad. “Interesting that you’d see that...a remnant of the power you gave up.”

Rian raised an eyebrow curiously. “What, like I regret giving it up or something?”

“Do you?”

“Not even a little.” Every day, the answer came a little easier. “I have power of my own now...I’m not looking to be my grandma, and I don’t want oops and gobs of power. I just want what’s mine, and to be the best at my magic that I can be.”

“Some might say that makes you odd.”

She shrugged, mouth thinning into a thoughtful looking line. “Maybe...but it makes me...well, me. Besides, if I hadn’t given up the power? I probably would be living a much different life...one I want no part of.”

“Why is that?”

She hesitated, then smiled a little. “If I was still mystical steroids girl? Odds are I never might have met that guy I told you about...Tadhg. I met him because I needed a little extra magic juice...and he’s helped me be a better witch, and a better person.”

“Well, let me ask you this, Rian: between your power and this man...do you think it was an even trade?”

She paused...then her smile grew. “If we’re talking about a deal between me and kismet, Doc? No, I don’t...personally? I think by walking away with a little magic instead of my pretty Irish boy, kismet got the world’s biggest shaft. And I’ll stand by that until Judgement Day.”
