It's really hot today.

I'm 26.

In April I unexpectedly won a CAORC Multi-Country Research Fellowship, and on Friday I'll leave for two months to research a few medieval monuments in Palermo, Sicily and Nicosia, Cyprus. I think the most intriguing facets of Latin artistic production in these former Byzantine/Islamic islands are its models and its interaction with earlier practices. Comparing the architecture and art of Lusignan Cyprus with Norman Sicily could offer new perspectives, for both courts enacted similar processes of appropriation and adaptation. Though the outcomes were disparate, tracing the analogies between the art promoted by the Hautevilles and the Lusignans (and the Villehardouins, and the kings of Jerusalem) should illuminate such processes within each kingdom's parameters.

I left work on the 22nd. ESP treated me extremely well, I found love and great friendships there, and learned useful skills to boot. It's profitable to keep thinking about crime, punishment, and the volition to repent and reform oneself because as taxpayers we're all implicit in criminal justice, and moreover all bound to humanity ourselves: for personal reflection, there's scope for loose definitions of "crime," but generally I think it's better to keep focus on betterment.
