Two decades

Walk down the street that used to be ours,
listening to the sound of ancient history.
It was back before we learned how to misbahave,
but we still always found new backyards to explore.
When tree houses were fortresses and shadows, ghosts.
Right here, this house used to be the Dandurand’s.
I’ve been simple, I’ve been too young to know.

Take a right on Broadway, almost there,
Friday night pool sharks, shooting for freedom.
When get togethers were just laughs over a game of hearts,
and midnight was a crammed car ride for pancakes.
While parents and neighbors slept, we were daydreaming.
Humble adventures have made this tribe.
I’ve had great company, I’ve hid the future in my pocket.

Face to face with my bliss,
These paths and rivers have seen my best days.
Floating a current of mountain runoff with kin and romance,
this river saves me more than my lifejacket.
When a livingroom is just the spirited campfire,
and the cielling is sleepy constellations across the sky.
I’ve known love, I’ve known the truth behind three words.

Olive street native for almost two decades now,
this road splits wider than ever.
“Follow your heart” they say, but they don’t tell you how.
There I found myself in Foreign, California.
One-way ticket, one step closer to liberating my dreams.
I’ve been brave, I’ve been a restless grasp for independence.

No matter what the scenery, or what my trail,
I will always come back home to you.
I’ve been changed, I’ve been old enough to know.

- me at 20.
