“Bella - is that you?”

Narcissa sat up in bed, her eyes squinting as she tried to stare through the darkness. Her bedroom door opened and a floorboard creaked underneath a skilled foot. Her narrowed eyes could pick up the slight outline of a nightdress, and hair - raven hair.

“Bella?” she whispered again, her voice becoming more estranged, “Oh please Bella say it is you! Don’t scare me.”

There was no response. Of course she should have known better, but she was the youngest sister and in a lot of ways she was the most naive. Even at Sixteen she was deathly afraid of the dark, never mind anything else. Sometimes it was a nice distraction, from reality - though Narcissa never usually saw it as such.

“Bellatrix!” she hissed, her whisper becoming nothing much less than a shout.

“Ow!”

Thud!

Narcissa scrambled for her wand, her heart in her mouth. She slid it from underneath her pillow, her shaking hands managing to keep it steady,
“Lumos.”

Bellatrix groaned her face was tired with confusion spread across it. She looked up at the blonde head hanging from the edge of the bed.

“Why on Earth,” she began taking in a deep breath, “Am I on your bedroom floor Cissy?”

Narcissa watched her gently nurse her head, having tripped over a pair of her stockings. She couldn’t help the small blush that crept up on her. Andromeda always pestered her about leaving her clothes about, ‘Could hurt someone you know’. Narcissa always secretly hoped it would be dear Andy, she never thought it would be Bella. Her Bellatrix.

She cleared her throat, after pausing,
“I don’t know but you scared the living daylights out of me!”

“Shouldn’t leave your stuff around,” Bellatrix grumbled as she stood up, picking the stockings up off the floor.

“And you shouldn’t be walking into my room like that!” the youngest hissed slightly, eying the door for her parents. The Black household wasn’t the friendliest place to live after all.

“How can I help sleepwalking?” Bella replied, her eyes rolling. She sat on the bed, her sibling automatically moving to curl around her. Narcissa always liked to lie with her head against Bella’s shoulder. It was strangely soothing.

“Sorry Bella,” she breathed after another silence, “I know you can’t help it.”

In truth Narcissa wanted to remain this way forever. She didn’t want to grow up, but sadly she was. There was no ignoring it, but it was so unfair! Her Bella would leave, then Andy, then - her.

“Don’t marry him,” she commented, her hand clinging onto her sister’s, “Please.”

Bellatrix sighed; she turned to face her sister a sad smile on her face.

“You know there’s no choice Cissy,” she spoke softly - like she always did to her, “I have to, for the family.”

“Family,” Narcissa grumbled like a petulant child.

Her sister let out a breath, her hands found Narcissa’s chin, she tilted her face up so she could look at her clearly. Bellatrix stayed like that for what felt like agonising hours to Narcissa - but it was only mere minutes.

“You’re very beautiful you know. In a couple of years you’ll be married too.”

Narcissa swallowed back the lump that had formed in her throat. She’d never thought of herself as beautiful, spoilt maybe, the baby of the three but never beautiful. That was always Bellatrix. She had to admit she admired her eldest sibling so much that she sometimes loathed her. She was the odd one out.

“I don’t want to,” she replied in a voice that was barely audible.

Bellatrix changed, her face becoming a frown which then turned into a scowl.

“Grow up!” her sister snapped, standing up from the bed. It made her feel odd and alone.

“Wait!” she called, quickly rising and following her to the door. Her hand touched Bellatrix’s shoulder and all of a sudden.

Thump!

She pushed her back against the wall, hands pinning her shoulders in place.

“Bella-”

“I don’t want to do this Narcissa, I really don’t. But I’m seeing things now, meeting people - so horrible,” she trailed off, her grip loosening on Narcissa, “Please understand it is not just for the family, but you - I never want you to see these things.”

Her hand gently grazed her sister’s cheek; Narcissa placed a hand on top of hers. Somehow she knew that everything would change - so soon.

“I love you,” she admitted quietly, knowing her love meant so much more than a sister’s love.

“I love you too Cissy.”

When Bellatrix kissed her Narcissa promised it would be the first and last. It ended up being neither. It ended up being nothing and something all the same.
