Summary: Lavender get's an interview with Rita.

When Rita approached Lavender for inside news about the golden trio, the girl willingly obliged. She’d been more than disgruntled when her ‘Won Won’ left her for frumpy Hermione Granger. What did she have that Lavender didn’t? She wasn’t as pretty as her. She didn’t seem very fun - her idea of a fun time was spent in the library looking at dusty old books. Hermione hadn’t been the one who was there for Ron, who supported him, especially when he wanted so badly to be a good keeper. There were so many weekends she gave up for him, so much of her time.

Lavender wanted revenge. She wanted to hurt Ron the way he had hurt her.

They met in Hogsmeade one weekend. While the rest of the students were exploring the village and getting their fill of sugar quills, Lavender sat in The Hog’s Head with Rita Skeeter. Usually students weren’t allowed of course, but Rita had pulled some strings. That was what made the situation so perfect - nobody would know. She’d have an hour alone with the disgruntled young witch - no holding back.

Perfect.

“Would you like a drink?” Rita offered, unusually accommodating.

“Oh yes please,” Lavender accepted the offer, a smile on her face. Soon enough a butter beer was placed on the table in front of her.

“So Miss Brown, shall we begin?”

Lavender nodded, lifting the mug of beer to her mouth. She took a sip, leaving a white line of foam across her top lip. She smiled without realising. Her smile faltered soon enough though.

“You have a little something,” Rita began, a smirk on her face. She raised a critical eyebrow. The girl was hopeless, “Just there.”

Lavender raised her hand to where Rita demonstrated, her cheeks started to burn crimson,
“Oh.”

She wiped the foam away with her hand, looking anywhere but at the older witch. There was something about her that made her stomach churn with both fear and excitement.

“Let’s begin then - shall we?”

Rita leaned across the table, her chin propped up by her hand. She smiled at the witch, seemingly satisfied. Her quill and notepad hovered by her head, already writing words that nobody had yet spoken.

“So you, Lavender Brown, dated Harry Potter’s best friend. You sit here before me, a young girl who is hurt by his actions. Is there another side to Mr Potter and his friends? A side that the world has yet to see?”

Lavender blanched slightly at that. There was something about the question that made her smile, a smile that matched Rita’s. She thought back to how hurt she was when Ron left her. How humiliated she felt when Ron asked for Hermione instead of her.

She then thought of her - Hermione Stupid Granger - the frumpy bookworm, the know-it-all, the boyfriend stealer. She’d had no interest in Ron until she was with him.

“Yes! Yes there is. The three of them are manipulative. Especially Hermione Granger!”

Rita laughed at that, approval spread across her face.

“Hermione Granger - the girl who a mere two years ago dated Harry Potter himself. Ex-girlfriend of Viktor Krum the quidditch superstar. It seems she has a flair for breaking hearts.”

Lavender observed the quill as it furiously jotted down every word that Rita said. She relished it - picturing Ron’s face with every scribble it made against the parchment.

“Tell me Lavender - were you suspicious?”

Lavender shook her head, her hands knitting together nervously.

“No - not at all,” she spoke innocently, her eyelids fluttering at the older witch, “She seemed so nice. Almost like a friend sometimes. Although we shared very little in common, I thought I knew her rather well. After all we’ve shared a dormitory since we started school.”

The journalist smirked at her then. Her eyes almost devoured the girl. She reminded her so much of herself when she was her age - a girl after her own heart. It almost warmed her. It made her tingle.

“So you’d say she is very good in concealing her true nature, her true prerogative?”

“Oh yes - yes definitely. I mean she didn’t look twice at Ron until I was with him. They didn’t even speak for a few weeks. It felt like she was plotting against me on purpose.”

Rita added her own thoughts to the interview. Commenting on how vulnerable and fragile Lavender was.

“Thank you so much,” Lavender said as Rita stood up, just as the interview ended.

“Oh it’s my pleasure. Really, I do enjoy a good sob story.”

The way Rita looked at her it was like she was examining her. It made a shiver run through the girl. The images of Ron that floated around her mind were soon replaced by the mature blonde witch. She tingled at the thought, staring up into her eyes. She saw a twinkle behind the framed glasses.

“You should really consider a career in journalism my dear,” Rita commented, leaning down over Lavender. The girl tilted her head up just in time. A kiss that was meant for her forehead ended up against her lips. Lavender blushed deeply as Rita pulled back.

“Thank you,” she barely managed once more, earning a laugh from the older woman.

Rita turned to leave as Lavender stood up behind her.

“I think I will,” she called after her, “Only if I get to throw stones at people with you.”

Of course the statement was metaphorical but it felt nice to hurt someone. It was actually, strangely, rewarding, especially when the person helping was so oddly beautiful.

Rita tilted her head, stealing one last look at her. She smirked,
“You need to work on your aim first.”

Lavender swallowed hard, nodding meekly.

Oh she would.
