Taylor was at it again, the latest 24 hour dance marathon was just a few short weeks away and he was busy organizing the music for it. Rory was coming back into town for it and had promised to be Lorelai's partner just so they could kick Kirk's butt and make the trophy their own.
This time they were fundraising for something-or-other. No one had really paid attention except for Kirk. He could tell you everything about it as well as that he planned to do his victory lap, this year holding Lulu and running around. If he could manage it, he was going to do it backwards, just to annoy Lorelai.
The dance marathon was going to start the following Saturday, Lulu had already been told she was going to dance with Kirk. He'd been telling everyone, going so far as to asking Taylor if the posters could have their names on it.
The dancing had started, they were into the second hour and the contestants had already started dropping. Babette and Morey had opted out this year, helping with coffee and food. They had also been advised of project drop, something Lulu had devised and gotten plenty of help on.
"So, you'll do it? You'll help without telling Kirk?"
"If there is anything this town is good at, it's keeping secrets from Kirk."
"Yeah doll, don't worry about it. Kirk'll never know."
"I don't want to dance for 24 hours. Not again."
The plan had only taken a few hours to set up and as Babette had said, Kirk was none the wiser. Babette had slipped Miss Patty the music CD earlier, it was going to be poignant and it was going to be memorable.
They had been dancing for six hours before Taylor gave them a 10 minute break for coffee. Miss Patty changed the music CD while Taylor was yelling into the bull horn and Rory and Lorelai headed straight for the coffee table, they wanted to be awake when it happened. They weren't planning on being there much longer, but they wanted to see it.
"You've got everything ready?"
"Relax Lulu, he'll never know you had a hand in it."
"He'll think me and Rory sabotaged him anyway."
"And I'm not here often, so he can't bully me."
It was not long after they came back from the 10 minute break when they heard the starting chords of the note. Taylor piped up and shouted through his megaphone. "It's time for the Twist, you have to keep one hand attached to your partner, but you have to do the twist."

Rory and Lorelai turned so they were facing Kirk and Lulu. Those that knew were watching the dance floor with interest. All they had to do was wait for the key words of the lyrics. It was in the middle of the chorus that it would go down and they personally could not wait.

Lulu fell to the floor, bringing Kirk down with her. For dramatic effects she let out a yell. Babette, who at that stage was manning the first aid table, went calmly over and looked at the fallen couple. She bent down over Lulu and started to shake her head.
"I'm sorry doll, we're going to have to strap this up. No more dancing for you."
Kirk's face crumpled, he had been in the running for dance champion for the 10th year running. Lulu reached up and grabbed his hand, pulling him down closer to her. Kissing him softly on the lips she whispered. "I'm sorry, but there's always next year?"
Rory and Lorelai were laughing, they finished out the song before heading off to the floor. They didn't care anymore, they had seen the best part and it would be something that would stick with them for awhile to come.
