Satan, the Prince of Cabaret

Ezra: When the sanctified dead arise from their graves for judgement, I'll start doling out cash.

I love this episode. All the boys are used well and Ezra is at his smarmy, offensive best. Rancher Nettie and her niece Casey are being threatened by a nefarious rancher named Guy Royal who is forcing farmers to sell their land to him that is going to be in the path of the coming railroad. Vin is particularly taken by Nettie when Mary persuades the boys to get involved. When Royal buys the mortgage on Nettie's farm, Vin bullies Ezra into paying it then Chris steals the money back. Royal calls in a disgusting villain named Top Hat Bob who starts terrorizing farmers and seems to have a beef with Chris that Chris can't remember. When the boys are threatened by Bob and Ezra's coat is stolen, they come up with a plan to save Nettie. Josiah, having been turned down by his lady love Emma who's in town, declines to ride along. The raid looks like it might not go off until Josiah shows up sloshed and causes a distraction while Chris and company takes down Top Hat Bob. Nettie is saved and Casey goes on to moon over JD.

Buck recognizes true love right away when he sees it. Casey IS terribly annoying, but it's not really her fault. She has no clue how to interact with a guy she likes and JD is deeply clueless too.

"A gentleman does not debase himself by engaging in menial labor."

Oh Ezra, you're just so awful in this episode. I love you for it. It's not true awfulness, he just won't go out of his way to help Nettie. If he hadn't been such slacker out there on the ranch, Vin might not have zeroed in on him for the money so quickly.

Ezra never does like it when the other guys look at him like that. It generally never ends up well for him.

Ezra is having none of Vin's plan. I always get tickled when he calls Nettie a "whizened crone, no offense". That's so Ezra all over. He's offensive, but he never really seems to intend it too deeply. It's not like he dislikes Nettie at all, he just doesn't think this is his problem, or at least not his money's problem. He's more than willing to get involved with life risking things when it comes to helping the guys, but I still don't think he'd be lending them money either.

"Don't thank me, thank Robin Hood over there."

He does the right thing eventually, but not without his own mercenary spin on it. I personally don't think Vin handles the situation that great, but Ezra does fork over the money with a stipulation of getting interest.

Chris and co. very illegally steal back the 300 dollars. This is one of the shadiest deals the guys ever do. Yes, Royal is horrible, but the way he did things was legal, underhanded but legal.

Ezra is heartbroken he doesn't get his interest. 10 to 1 he brings it up again to Vin at some point.

Top Hat Bob: "...Mr. Royal would like that coat."
Ezra: "And you'd like a face. Guess you're both out of luck."

NOOOOO! NOT HIS FACE! Ezra makes one of the best cracks of the episode and takes a shot to the face for his effort.

Chris: There are a couple of ladies I'm scared of running into, but you're not one of them.

Chris can't remember Top Hat Bob for the life of him.

Buck and Chris mooing at JD. Chris seemed to be having fun in this episode, whih is nice as he has far too little fun.

Ezra: Just don't blow up the son of a bitch who has my coat.

Buck and Ezra have EPIC FAIL with the dynamite.

Ezra mourns the loss of his coat by donning...someones...coat. He could have just changed outfits, but apparently it's all too traumatic for him and he ends up in some stray duster. He looks pretty good in it though.

Ezra still all banged up and finally doing some physical helping.

Mary: "... I think they moved up North, but I'll find them."
Ezra: "I bet you will."

I really liked that little exchange. Ezra's rather sweet and admiring teasing of Mary. It's one of the few genuine exchanges he's had up to this point.
