Two days of school left means my classes are spending most of their time watching a movie while I tie up loose ends for them. 3 out of 4 classes chose Pirates of the Caribbean for their viewing pleasure and I'd forgotten I hadn't watched that movie in quite a long time. One other class watched the third one and again, had forgotten I hadn't seen it in a while. I forgot how much I liked Orlando Bloom in it. He's no Cary Grant, but he's fun to watch. I'm not sure I understand why he takes such a beating from people who think he can't act. As a swashbuckler he's actually really good and much more convincing than a lot of actors who get chucked in armor and handed a sword (lest we forget the tragedy that IS Colin Firth in The Last Legion). Sure he's overly sincere and sort of clueless in the first movie, but so's his character. By the third movie he actually seems quite comfortable being angsty and romantic without being cheesy. He's fun in LOTR because who really wants a boring elf? Kingdom of Heaven I think is his best movie and I think he did an excellent job in it. Unfortunately the director's cut is infinitely better than the actual released movie.
So, while not the best actor in the world, he's got the charisma to carry off sword movies quite well. I would totally watch him in Prince of Persia if that ever comes into being (it's the best rumor that movie's had thus far). Honestly I'd love to see a remake of Quo Vadis with him. I adore the old Quo Vadis and think he would be okay in it.
