Are Pumas Known for Their Whining?

This episode didn't strike me as a favorite, but it wasn't bad.

I'll admit that the part where the girl's mother showed up was fairly creepy. It's one of those moments where you know it's going to happen, but it's still disturbing.

Meanwhile, Dean is desperate. He has decided he doesn't want to die and is fighting against death with all the blind wildness of someone who is grasping for hope anywhere. He sounded pathetically and sadly like a little boy being scolded when fake!John turned up on the phone. It's also sad because while I'm sure part of him knew that it couldn't be John (Dean is the skeptic after all), he's so desperate to believe in something.

There's also been a shift in the boys leaning on each other. Before it's always been Dean protecting Sam and keeping Sam in the dark about things. Dean is finally straightforwardly admitting that he's scared. He's the weaker of the two now and he is actually looking to lean on Sam now.

And Sam has changed too. He's still the voice of reason a lot of the time, but he's admittedly becoming more like Dean. How many times have we seen Sam kill people in a wide variety of very ruthless and gruesome ways? Off the top of my head I can think Gordon beheading, Crossroads Demon getting plugged between the eyes and demon on a spike in this episode. More and more Dean is being seen as the conscience of the two. While he's more emotional and has wilder mood swings, that's the very thing that makes him a bit more sensitive. Sure Sam is always the one better able to handle people, but he's also the more clinical and rational which makes him much more cold blooded in the long run.
