Rose and Ten end up on a planet orbiting a black hole. The planet shouldn't exist, confusing Ten to no end. To make matters infinately worse, an earthquake causes the Tardis to fall into the planet, leaving Rose and Ten stranded. The explorers on the planet have their own alien race as slaves. While the aliens seem to be docile, they also seem to know what's going on, namely that the devil has been reawakened.

There's an interesting conversation where Ten contemplates living life as a normal person. He doesn't thrill to the fact that he has to get a job and a mortgage. Rose offers to share a house with him. The conversation awkwardly breaks down, but this is the closest Rose gets to stating a purpose.

When Ten goes on a dangerous mission, Rose reacts like a panicky wife, refusing to get off the radio and kissing him goodbye. When Ten hears that Rose is in trouble back on the planet, he completely forgets the mission and goes back to save her.

Ten: Well, I'm stuck here.
Rose: Yeah, well, stuck with you is not so bad.

With the alien slave race possessed and gone murderous and Ten trapped down on the planet, things look mighty bad. Ten gets into an existential debate with the devil. Rose proves she's great in a crisis, which is probably why Ten likes her so much.

Ten's conversation before he drops off into the void is interesting. He nearly says he loves Rose again, but leaves off, knowing that Rose knows he loves her. He can't say it. It's too much for someone like him. His companions just know. When the devil backs Ten into a corner of sacrificing Rose or letting the devil escape, Ten chooses to bring down the devil believing Rose will be able to save herself. He's right too.

Ten: I'll get back. Rose is up there.

Ten: If you talk to Rose. Just tell her... Tell her... Oh, she'd know.

Ten: If I believe in one thing, just one thing, I believe in her.

A pleasant bloke named Elton gives a video presentation of his interaction with the Doctor. He and several other people had formed "LINDA", a group originally formed to investigate the Doctor, but has turned into a bit of a social club until Victor Kennedy takes over the group and orders them to search for the Doctor. Elton befriends Jackie while various members of LINDA go missing. Jackie finds out what Elton is about and lights into him, venting her spleen about being left behind by Rose and Ten. Elton finally stands up to Victor only to find out that he's an alien who absorbs people. When Ursula, the girl Elton likes, is absorbed Ten shows up with Rose who is enraged because Elton upset Jackie. The absorbed LINDA members end up defeating the alien by pulling him apart. Ten is able to save Ursula in a strange manner, though no one else.

Elton makes a point that maybe people who touch the Doctor end up being doomed. Maybe that's true, as chaos seems to follow the Doctor wherever he goes.
