Who Are These People?

My impression of Pirates of the Caribbean 2

I actually found myself rather disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't that the movie wasn't swashbuckling and fun the watch, it just didn't work as a complete movie. There were far too many plot lines and characters were just sort of thrown everywhere.

Most annoying thing? Characters suddenly seemed to have different personalities from the first movie. Elizabeth was spunky, yet a lady in the first movie. In this one I found myself extremely annoyed by her. She doesn't seem to know what she wants, she comes across as a maneater and she seems to be a Mary Sue. Everyone in love with her? Check. Has mad fighting skills? Check. Dresses up like a spunky tomboy? Check, check. I was thoroughly turned off at her while the three way fight was going on as she simply seemed like a spoiled brat throwing a tantrum, not the fiesty Elizabeth of the past.

Second character I took issue with was Norrington. Not only did he actually seem to be confused why he was there, his willingness to turn betrayer seemed forced. If there was one thing consistant about Norrington it was that he was an upright man. That's why he was so stiff and uppity in the first movie. His desintegration seems a bit fast. On a side note, he has a completely sexy voice.

Third character was actually Jack. Beforehand he seemed like a free wheeling though manipulative spirit who was essentially good at his core. This one he seemed completely self centered and a bit mean spirited. I don't believe the first movie Jack would have sent Will to his death. They tried to make it seem like Jack is trying to find his moral compass, but he HAD one in the first movie. Where did it go?

There really wasn't that much quotable in this movie and a lot of the humor was referential to the first movie and half hearted at that. And where did this love triangle come from? While I can understand Elizabeth being attracted to Jack, it still seemed out of the blue since she didn't seem to be at all in the first movie and he certainly wasn't with her other than to flirt outrageously now and then. It wasn't serious, yet here she suddenly seems to have a big yen for Jack and he for her. It completely takes away from the "she and Will have true love" thing since that whole aspect is thrown in now.

What I did love was Will. He seemed a little out of place since all the characters had changed but him, but I found myself really liking him. Orlando has filled out and gotten a lot hotter for one thing and this movie seems to have an Orlando fetish as it consistantly gets him wet, gets him dirty and gets him hurt in that order. The whipping scene totally pushed my buttons as not only does he have a nice back, the whole hurt/comfort instinct in me clicked on. Yes, he's overly earnest and yes, Orlando plays the part seriously, but at least he's consistant. And you actually feel for Will when he sees Elizabeth kissing Jack. This is the woman he's repeatedly risked his life for and is willing to die for, and there she is kissing someone else. Will, being noble and earnest, will give her up to make her happy, but he's not going to be mature like Norrington about it. And why should he be? Norrington didn't try to move heaven and hell to save her skinny butt repeatedly. And say what you will about Elizabeth only doing it to trick Jack, she was awfully overly friendly beforehand too. Jack obviously appeals to her wild side (one that she only had mildly and forcedly in the first movie) and in this movie she seemed more suited to Jack, which is something I never thought I'd say. Will has reason to be upset. Of course he then takes Elizabeth's guilt over getting Jack killed as her grieving for him just like she takes Will's forced praise of Jack as him being upset that he's gone, which keeps her from telling the truth and makes her more guilty. Vicious cycle.

Also, the three way fight was well worth it. The movie is the best when it concentrates on the swashbuckle and less on the multiple story lines out of no where. The movie seemed like it was really trying too hard, telling too much stuff and not tying anything up at the end. It didn't seem like a complete movie. If you just walked in watching this movie by itself, it wouldn't make a ton of sense.

So, to end: upset about the character inconsistancy, love Will, love the swashbuckle, disappointed by the writing, and hoping the last one will redeem it all.
