I still only have two players, so my hope is to inspire others to join by revealing... The setup.
The PCs are employed by the governer of Deeping Fast, a mining and craft colony established three years ago by her eternal light Queen Daphne III. Monthly caravans of grain and livestock are sent to the oasis of Deeping Fast from the imperial seat in exchange for gold, copper, and precious gems. Recently, however, caravans have been disappearing as they pass through the desert. None of the disappearing caravans have been food caravans from the imperial seat, and Queen Daphne has become disgruntled. She has threatened to discontinue the food caravans unless her tribute resumes.
The PCs have been retained to protect this month's shipment as it passes through the desert. If it does not reach the capital, the people of Deeping Fast will surely starve.
Background
Twenty years ago King Ryan passed beyond the Fields of Reeds (died) and left his two grown daughters to govern the realm. The eldest, Marion, had been raised from a baby to ascend the throne, but when she was presented to the high temple and the black ram was sacrificed, the omens were dire. To ward away the anger of the gods, Marion was sent into the desert and her younger sister Daphne became queen. Queen Daphne has proved to be a skilled administrator, and has pushed a number of progressive and expansionist policies.
The mines at Deeping Fast were opened for two main reasons. The first is to secure a permanent alliance with the Dwarves living in the Sunspire Mountains. The gold and copper from the mines is earmarked as gifts to impress the dwarven people. Queen Daphne intends to invite the dwarves to join her kingdom by the end of the year.
The gems from the mines are intended to support Daphne's newly opened college of arcane magic. A decade ago, the study of arcane magic was limited to the nobility and priests. The new college accepts applicants based on merit, not birth. This has been popular with the common citizens and caused angry mutterings with the nobles.
Character Creation Rules - PCs will begin the game with 32,000 exp (eight level) and 13947 gold coins to equip themselves. Stats should be rolled on four dice (drop the lowest) and placed as you see fit. Email me your characters, please, before posting them here so I can double check all of your work.
