so...i'm a second semester sophomore! yippee! my classes are going really well thus far, i have some really amazing professors. there was one professor i was a bit nervous about, as this is one of the reviews he got:

cut because it's a bit lengthy but the general idea is that he is a pompous asshole. )

Maybe philosophy profs are just generally crazy? :p Mine was late for the first class and barely on time for the second. He has quite a reputation for insulting his students, though once I started getting used to it, it was kind of funny--half of us are "damn liars" because we said we had never been in love. He's also promised to think we are stupid if he comes in and argues for a ridiculous idea and we agree with him just because he's the prof.

As for staying on one topic--that sometimes happens in phil classes, aparently. My prof warned us that we may well spend weeks on something if we keep wanting to discuss it more, and that he's not so concerned with getting through the book as he is with teaching us to love searching for wisdom.

So far he hasn't been totally absent, though. That's kind of weird. o_O If he needs to be gone that much, maybe they should use an adjunct...?

yeah, i agree, staying on topic is pretty difficult in some philosophy classes. getting through the syllabus was more a high school thing where you needed it for all the damn tests you had to take to prove your merit. the whole goal of this particular class is to think like a philosopher and move away from the whole business of just quoting what everyone has said before you. im perfectly pleased with the direction the class is moving in thus far (knock on wood!!).
