I posted this on Keihound's journal. She's moving to the United States and asked about different states. I live in good ol' West by god Virginia so here's my take on it. Feel free to comment, agree, disagree, debate, etc.

I live in West Virginia. NOT PART OF VIRGINIA! People still confuse WV with "western Virginia" but we split from VA during the Civil War and are one of two states that formed from the war.
Our culture is part of what is known as "Appalachia" (mountain range). I live half an hour away from Marietta, OH, and we have a phrase: "I hate driving in Ohio because the drivers there drive like they're from Ohio." XD Lots of people here do drugs like meth and weed, sometimes cocaine. Where I live, there are meth labs busted all the time.
WV is absolutely gorgeous (forests, mountains) but has devastating practices like coal mining and logging, although it makes tons of electricity. Some farming but the mountains rule out a lot of land. Warmish-hot, humid summers and mild-cold winters, depending on where you live. The Allegheny Mountains trap moisture so we get a lot of rain, snow, fog, etc.
We have fishing, hiking, hunting (deer season is HUGE here... watch the Blue Collar Comedy Tour), whitewater rafting, etc. Native American history, mound builders, and preserved mounds in a lot of places here.
Lots of Germans, Irish, and English (I'm all three). Also hillbillies/rednecks/hicks who can be very religious, conservative, and typically close-minded. Religion and traditional values emphasized. Lots of places in WV have horrible poverty and education.
The Silence of the Lambs was filmed here too... creepy. All in all, WV isn't the best but I like it. Very naturesque.
