I'm launching a new project. I collect weird junk, and, more to the point, I have a lot of weird junk. So I would like to be charitable with it; I would like to give it away. That's right; I will mail or deliver this stuff to you for free! All I ask is that you justify to me what you want it for. Give me a good story. Stuff (and shipping costs) in exchange for stories. That's the point. SO:

Joseph Campbell made a funny:

A metaphor is an image that suggests something else. For instance, if I say to a person, "You are a nut," I'm not suggesting that I literally think the person is a nut. "Nut" is a metaphor. The reference of the metaphor in religious traditions is to something transcendent that is not literally any thing.

For example, Jesus ascended to heaven. The denotation would seem to be that somebody ascended into the sky. That's literally what is being said. But if that were really the meaning of the message, then we would have to throw it away, because there would be no place for Jesus literally to GO. We know that Jesus could not have ascended to heaven because there is no physical heaven anywhere in the universe. Even ascending at the speed of light, Jesus would still be floating around in the galaxy somewhere.
