When Daphne Millbrook manifested her power, she celebrated. All her life she'd prayed for just one thing - to be able to walk, to be free from the braces and crutches that allowed her to just barely move. And finally, on the day of a total solar eclipse, her prayer had been answered.

"Ask and ye shall receive," her father quoted from the family Bible, tears in his eyes when she came in from the cornfield, arms outstretched, laughing so hard she was crying.

It didn't take long for Daphne to realize that her cup runneth over - or, to paraphrase, that "when it rains, it pours." She discovered she could move so fast that she felt like she was flying. She circled the cornfield over and over, timing herself, unable to believe her own speed.

Daphne found her mother's high school track medal - she had been a Kansas state champion runner. She took to carrying it with her as she challenged herself to greater and greater distances. The farther she ran from home, the more free she felt, and that freedom was addictive. Before long, she had crisscrossed the continent, eventually traveling the globe several times. She took an apartment in Paris and met others with powers like hers, extraordinary abilities, and she began playing dangerous games of swindling and sabotage.

As fast as she was, she was slow to realize the intricacy of this web of deception and dastardly deeds. When she found someone she cared about in the crosshairs, she was overwhelmed. It was fight or flight, and what was a speedster to choose?

She returned to Lawrence, Kansas, the only place she'd ever called home. She hadn't realized, however, the sacrifice she'd made when she left it behind. Her father smiled and told her he was happy to see her, but the heartbreak of her leaving still left a raw edge to his voice. She was invited in, welcomed back to her old room, but the place didn't seem the same.

No, that wasn't right - the place was exactly as it always had been. It was Daphne who had changed. She was distant.
