I subscribe to Latina magazine and was thrilled to see that they were still publishing letters from readers regarding Sara in their May issue. Its a fair magazine so it publishes letters with good and bad things to say about its articles. Now call me naïve but it never once crossed my mind that Sara's article from the March issue would ever receive a negative response. Until I read the following.

"I am a high school librarian in Waco,Texas. I am writing to say how offended I am by the March 2011 cover of Sara Ramirez. MS.Ramirez is a beautiful woman, but what kind of message is she sending to young girls? You have to parade around in your underwear to be on the cover of a national magazine? We are trying to empower young Latinas to be educated and succesful young women." Katherine Aufman, Waco, Texas

First of all...What?!?! I broke out my protected issue to re-read the article just so I could combat this response. I may be only talking to myself but doesn't matter its that important to me. Mutiple times in the article she refers to the body image issues she had throughout life and how the photo shoot in the article was a in part a celebration of moving past that. Of celebrating that fact that she has a figure and curves and its nothing to be ashamed of.

Which begs the question Kathrine Aufman of Waco,Texas...Did you even read the article?? I am going to have to go with no. I mean had she she would have recived the very clear message of why she did that. Mujer you just addmited you are a librarian and you didn't even read the article before you blasted it and a highly respected talented actress. Which begs the question what kind of example are YOU setting for those high school students. Surely it wouldn't be to jump to a snap decison without facts or dare I say reading!:O

AY DIOS MIO!

As a 23 year old Latina woman I am offended by your response and ignorance. Based off your name which sounds of European decent (Mind you I could be wrong as my name Kellymarie is not exactly Latin) However if you aren't even of Latin decent how are you going to tell me what message she sends to me? Because as a young Latina woman she is doing everything you are saying she isn't. Its not her that decides if I will be an educated and succesful woman. That lays on my shoulders only. However does it help to see a strong beautiful articulate and healthy woman with features like mine? You better believe it does. She empowers young Latina women more than you could ever know

Gracias y buenas noches

sara ramirez
