So, anyone who went to Broadview with me should remember the ridiculousness of Mr. Toms and his love-affair with his former school. And they will also remember the time he took us to Puttman in gr 8 to see their production of Guys and Dolls. We were all like "Whoa, random." But we went, and it was all good.
Fast forward one year to Lisgar, gr 9. Junior Jazz Band played "When I Fall in Love," a lovely ballad that I had associated with Guys and Dolls since the previous year when we saw it at Puttman. Now, when we first played it at Lisgar, I definitely thought "Hey, I remember this song from Guys and Dolls. Cool." Since then the song has had the effect of reminding me of both Guys and Dolls and LCI Junior Jazz Band 2000-2001. Fun times.
Lisgar is putting on Guys and Dolls this year, and my brother is in the pit orchestra, plays cds of it all the time, etc. We borrowed the DVD of the Hollywood adaptation to watch tonight; I'd seen it on more than one occasion previously, and I knew that some of the songs were different from the musical version. I also knew that some songs had been left out of the Puttman version.
An offhand remark from me prompted my brother to inform me that I was wrong: "When I Fall in Love" is not in Guys and Dolls. What? Really? That's totally bizarre. Why have I been associating this particular song with this particular musical for years, then? How the hell did that happen?
The weird thing is, I can picture the scene in which I thought they sang "When I Fall in Love," even though the more I think about it the less sense it makes for the plot as a whole.
Upon Googling, it's definitely by a different composer than the musical anyway, and they would hardly have added a totally random song to the musical at Puttman.
Weeeird.
I feel lost! Something constant has been pulled out from under me! I am exaggerating, of course. But this is really bizarre.
Anyway.
In other news I am about to embark on what I estimate will be another lengthy period of Django Reinhardt LOVING. Not that I ever stop loving his music, but I do go through long period of time not listening to any. This goes for everything I like, of course. But so good! Dude was insane.
annnnd officially accomplished nothing this weekend. Just in case anyone is keeping track.
