[ it looks as though Orion has only a few seconds to live. the bay is sealed and there's no way the doors can be repaired in time to save him. maybe it's fate that someone was watching all of this unfold. not that he was playing any part battle. perhaps he never intended to ( Read more... )

On the other side of the ship, the Doctor had finally succeeded to disentangle himself from his companion after toppling over the sofa standing in his suite's doorway. Of course, it didn't help that just as the ship charged forward, he'd grabbed hold of his friend so neither of them would go sliding down the hall, but falling back back into the room had left them in a rather interesting position. That didn't stop him from seeing the sacrifice Axel had made to save Orion, and he couldn't help feeling a little...regretful for thinking the way he had about the man. Still, there wasn't time to mourn, not now that Orion was injured and unconscious, and lord knew what Ganymede was up to.

After seeing what Lina had done and had contacted her, he finally got to his feet, offering a hand to his friend to help him up to his feet after inquiring how he was. When he spoke next, his voice was soft, but filled with seriousness. "I know what I'm going to do and I know what you're going to do, and though I know I'm not going to like what you're going to do, you're not going to listen to me, so I'll just say this: if we run into any of those security bots--and chances are, we will since two of them are practically outside my door--I need to to listen to me, do not question what I ask you to do. And when I tell you to run, you run, got it? That lot needs some help."

Oliver was definitely not expecting the sudden change in the ship. At that point, he was already getting used to their attempts not working, but there was really no other explanation for the alarming jolt right after he broadcast his message as Olivia.

He wasn't surprised that the Doctor grabbed him the second the motion began, but he definitely wasn't expecting the two of them to go flying right into the sofa blocking the doorway to the Doctor's suite. But he didn't let this prevent him from seeing events any more than the Doctor did, and after the Doctor's little speech, Oliver nodded grimly, glad that this once they wouldn't have to argue.

"What did Lina say? Where are they going?"

"Well," he said glancing out into the hall, "she sounded a bit busy. I told her to bring Orion to Riku's roo--oi!" At that moment, he just managed to miss a laser blast zooming straight for his nose. He backed up in surprise, automatically covering his nose, though he knew nothing was wrong with it. He was lucky to have heard the dispelling of the laser a moment before else he'd have a very different look--and he rather liked this nose.

"Oh that idiot! Why did he activate those security protocols?!" he growled.

"Yeah, some way to save the frightened damsel!" Oliver immediately pulled his bag off his shoulder, reaching into it as he tried to remember what weapon-like items he had inside. A mini-baseball bat was probably the best choice, so he began fishing for that, watching for laser blasts as he did so. "If they're bringing Orion this way, we'll need to take care of the bots somehow first. Got a plan?"

"Of course I do," he said, heading toward the opposite end of the room across from the entrance. "You're staying here while I handle those two robots. They've upped the intensity of their lasers and if you don't believe me, have a look at the lovely little dent--well, no you can't see it, not unless you put your head out, but trust me, it's quite the scorcher."

Oliver made a face. "Sure, that's fine for now, but what about when more come? There's gotta be something I can do against them!"

He frowned, knowing he'd hear that. "Look," he began, and started feeling around for another one of his gadgets in his pockets, eventually pulling one out. "Catch." And he gave the small device a light toss.

Oliver caught the device in his free hand, abandoning the mini-bat to the confines of his bag before taking a close look at it. "What's this?"

"It's a--well, the name's very long and complicated and I'll explain that to you later. But! You can use it to remove some of the cabinet covers and make a shield of some kind for yourself. Not exactly sure if it'll completely stop you from harm, but it'll be better let the laser blasts hit you through that and not straight on," he explained, gesturing a bit as he did.

"Oh, and only use settings one through four. I haven't used five in years and it's always been a bit dodgy..."

"Okay," Oliver replied, shaking his head as he examined the device, trying to work out how you programmed in the setting at all. Eventually, it began to hum in his hand, and he headed into the room to get to work on the cabinets. "So," he called back out to the Doctor, "once I've got a shield, how do I start disabling robots?"

He stopped himself just before he started to sprint forward and peered into the kitchen. "Er, well, that's the part I'm not liking..."

Oliver turned, raising an eyebrow at the Doctor. "I can't help protect Orion if I can't attack the robots!"

"No, but have you ever had to defend yourself with a shield because that's the only thing you could find in a pinch and the armoury was fresh out of swords? No, wait, you weren't there with me for that, never mind, but the fact remains. You can still help by deflecting attacks," he said, practically bouncing on the balls of his feet now. He had to get out there and do what needed to be done and here he was assigning his friend a job that he, not too long ago, had refused to let him undertake! The irony certainly didn't escape him.

Oliver couldn't miss the Doctor's anxiousness. "Fine. Go!" he called, returning to the matter of figuring out exactly how to dismantle cabinets with what he had just decided to scientifically refer to as a "thingy." He still wasn't fond of the idea of having no way to attack the robots, but if he could at least shield Orion, that was something. And he did still have that bat. He glanced around him at the other items in the room, wondering if he could come up with a weapon on his own. Shield first, he reminded himself, focusing back on the cabinets.

"Remember what I said about setting five!" he yelled just before he turned his attentions back to his own task. With the sonic screwdriver in hand, he took off in a sprint and jumped, sailing straight over the sofa and into the hallway. He had about three seconds he reckoned before the lasers would find their target and he needed about that much time to recover from his leap. Quickly, he scrambled to his feet and darted to the side, a laser blast just winging his shoulder. He hissed loudly, but didn't let that stop him.

Thankfully, the robots were close by so he didn't have that far to run until he reached the first one. He hid behind one of them while the other shot at the first robot trying to reach him, effectively taking that first one out. And then took another laser shot to the shoulder--the same spot as before, which irritated him to no end--as he ran forward to disable the second security bot. The sonic screwdriver whirred into life after he turned up the power on it and effectively fried the robot's circuits.

"Yeah, I heard you!" Oliver held the device up to the cabinets, watching as the doors vibrated but did no more than that. He lowered the thingy, studying it again. "That'd be a lot easier if the labels were in English," he mumbled, turning a dial on it.

The humming abruptly grew a lot louder and higher in pitch, and the device itself vibrated for about a second before Oliver dropped it, crying out in surprise as a minor electric shock ran through his hand. "Found setting five!" he called. Tentatively, he reached out and gave the dial a whirl as fast as he could, swearing as he felt the current for the instant he was in contact with the metal. He sat back and eyed the device after that, waiting a minute before he dared to touch it again.

"Could've told me it was the middle setting. Shouldn't these things be in order?" he grumbled as he picked it back up and tried another setting, holding it by the cabinets again. "There we go!" he exclaimed, watching as a hinge began to loosen.
