So I had another busy, enjoyable weekend. Met up with Mel, Patrick, Shar'on and Sophie on Friday night for a meal in Mayfair. An enjoyable social occasion although the meal wasn't exactly great value for money. Not bad but you could have got exactly the same kind of food with friendlier service in one of the Turkish cafes in Stoke Newington or Camberwell. Still as I made no effort to find anywhere else I can't really complain I suppose.
As I was up that way anyway I dropped in on Patrick and Shar'on for afternoon tea. Shar'on has got the garden looking lovely - as much stuff as you could properly cram into it without it looking like a jungle. Patrick had his Bumper Boy's Book of Mountains* out so we had a look at where we'll be going for our walking holiday next week. Carried on from there to walk down the River Lea for a bit. The bits around Hackney Marshes were nice although it did get more ropy as it got nearer the Thames. I'm not sure whether I could have walked across it on the green scum on the surface but I could probably have picked my way over balancing on the shopping trolleys underneath. There did seem to be a few fishermen though so maybe there are still a few finny creatures underneath asphyxiating under the algae. Went back to Leyton in the evening to a barbecue at my friend Roland's. A few colleagues I used to work with at Guy's, some nice food and the red wine flowing freely.
Church on Sunday morning then I went out to Hammersmith to do the number nine bus. Much posher than nos. 6-8 going, as it does, right past Harvey Nichols, Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park Corner. The 10 goes a similar route but stops at Kings Cross which will give me a good excuse to snoop round the new Eurostar terminal. Did I tell you I'm a public transport geek ?!
Feeling a bit under the weather today. Nothing too serious but enough to justify two biscuits at elevenses and Black Forest gateau at lunch. I will need the calories, if not to fuel my recovery, then certainly as a safety reserve in case I get stuck up one of those Scottish mountains !
