But in a story, which is a kind of dreaming, the dead sometimes smile and sit up and return to the world.-Tim O’Brien
1967, and the heartbeat
of a young Marine, with all the 'palm-stink
of Saigon cradled in the shotgun seat,
a war in heaven ramping in the trunk.
One son channels Shane, Wayne, abandoned drives
like dad until he owns it, 50 west
with Sammy saddled up: girls and ghost-lives
to rock the blood, and sing, and father best
on the haunt-road: war-rutted, fire-started,
Dark-broke American trail, this homeland
of stashed cells, sad-salted, broken-hearted
deals; sing, Cain and brother, this is the end:
You scytheless can’t kill death, until you can.
Where soldiers raise up boys, and live again.
