Oh, boy. Have I got some stuff to talk about. First, lets discuss Other M.
You know, that new game staring the gaming worlds favorite shrinking violet, Samus Aran. Ah, and what an adventure she's having in the BOTTLE SHIP, attracted by a distress signal called the Baby's Cry, and all while dealing with the longing and emptiness she feels after the death of the baby, which was a Metroid. Oh, and don't we all just weep for her as she delivers suicidally, monotone narration of events we can clearly see and dealing with her problems with Adam, her old military commander, father figure, and love interest. She even goes so far to impress him that she stops using her weapons at the mere sight of him, not fleeing from the monster about to kill her or fight it properly with the weapons she already possesses until Adam, as emotionless and hard as a man should be, gives her the go ahead to use her missiles. It's as beautiful a declaration of love as any Shakespeare penned up.
Ok, sarcasm aside, this game is shit. Everything I've heard about it couldn't even begin to prepare me for it. The game is not about exploration. In fact, there's very little of that available. You're always told where to go and given a map to the destination. But worse than that, most of time, you're just running down long, empty corridors. There are even kill rooms. Now I may be wrong, but other than Metroid 2, I don't remember progression in a Metroid game to be determined by killing the same enemies that spawn from nowhere over and over until, mercifully, the game unlocks the door for you. The game also pretty much auto aims for you In probably what is a 60 angle from your normal stance, so most enemies can be beaten by standing in one spot and pressing the 2 button until they all die. And even when they are more difficult, it's either a matter of running around until you have the space (And the game allows you) to flip your wiimote up and fire a missile, or you just charge your shot up and jump on them for a canned death animation. It's not fun, and it's not Metroid. Hell, secret items even appear on your map.
There are good things about the game though. It is gorgeous, for one. It's probably one of the best looking Wii Games I've ever seen. And Samus runs really fast, so dashing from place to place to look for any items you might not have noticed blinking in LED blue at you on your map are not a chore to hunt down. And I think that's about it. Oh! The way you rocket backwards after firing a charge shot in the air is really cool.
Also in the list of problems, are terminals that require you to stop in just the right place to use, being able to regain health and missiles by concentrating really hard (Hold the Wiimote vertically and press A until a bar fills), an auto dodge as long as you're pushing a direction, infrequent save points combined with one way only routes, and it's just general a frustraiting experience.
And that was a long post, so I'll leave it for now.
