The heaviness across his shoulders and throat, the face next to his, and he is in an almost-embrace; the thick rasping sound of metal-on-metal as the sword is drawn; they register, but not enough to make Naruto move. There is a moment here where he is giving up because Sasuke is very near him and, really, this was all he wanted. Half of him doesn't really believe he'll be killed; but half doesn't care.
And then Sai is there, gripping thewrist that is swinging the sword, and it is only as Naruto is pinned between the two for that split second before they are both thrown back-
He is seeing the past and the present and the future all at once, the different stages and the ultimatum and then the reverse love song that plays the three of them into a long line of one-sided devotion.
Sai saves Naruto, and will again, and maybe he'll save him forever before Naruto will ever turn around to see him or to thank him. He sees Sasuke and even if Sasuke is one to glance back casually-and all of this is figurative, all of this is in their hearts-he is still holding Itachi's bloody hand and following him to death, as little brothers always tend to do.
They are all trying to protect the person dearest to them.
Sasuke will kill his brother because heloves him and wants him back, before all of this; his future is inthe past, and to return there he must tie up every loose end.
Sai only wants some form of absolution, and he has found something to dedicate himself to.
Naruto only wants Sasuke to care enoughto be his rival again.
Between the two of them, he feels Sasuke pause in the shift as Sai catches his wrist, and then Sai flush against his back as they are both forced away; a prudent hand on his hip to help his balance and they land like ninja and Naruto isn't near Sasuke anymore, but with him all the same.
And it ends like it always ends-with Sasuke walking away.
