Because I've been so slow and lazy, I'm still working on my review of this (almost done, though!), but I agree with a lot of your criticisms. I didn't buy Mackie and Tate's romance either, especially after that make-out scene in the graveyard, after which Mackie obsesses on the kissing and what it means and not, oh, you know, the handjob he obviously got. That seemed a lot more significant to me! (Or maybe that bit got taken out of the final published book?)
Cutter did just kind of wimp out at the end. What kind of villain takes a minor hit and just shrugs his shoulders and is like, "oh, whatever, I have better things to do than take the two extra seconds it'll take me to kill you now that I have a scratch"? A lot of the ending felt rushed, and the evil fey villains that had been built up the entire novel were suddenly ineffective. Mackie's plan to save everyone and free the town should not have worked at all.
I did like a lot about the debut, though, mostly setting and atmosphere and the interesting way she portrayed the fey and their relationship with the town. I like Mackie's relationship with his sister, as well. I'll definitely be interested in reading whatever Yavonoff writers next; I think this was a strong enough debut to show real promise.
