Sunshine all the time makes a desert

Tomorrow I will be off to Utah, to do some camping and hiking in Arches National Park and Canyonlands. I've never been to Utah (driving through Salt Lake City on my way from Seattle to Denver does not count) and I've never been hiking or camping in a desert-y area (only woodsy areas), so I'm excited to do something new. And we haven't been camping in a looooooong time. But we are old now so we are car camping and not backpacking. This means real coffee and eggs and french toast for breakfast and fancy things like homemade calzones for dinner and s'mores at night and lots of beer. (Yes, we will be brining our own beer from outside of Utah, a dry state in so many ways.) This also means we will be shamelessly using our air mattress and real pillows in the tent. (Can you tell I was not all that great at backpacking? I like camping, and I can be outdoorsy, but not really, really outdoorsy. Have you seen Troop Beverly Hills, where they camp inside a hotel room? Yeah, that's kinda my idea of a good time.)

So, I will be away from Livejournal and all the internets for at least five or six days, after which I hope the withdrawal symptoms will not kill me if I can get back to my computer within fifteen minutes of arriving back at home. I am leaving the DS at home but bringing a couple books (Shadow Magic, the sort-of sequel to Havemercy, which I have for review; and a comfort favorite, The Queen of Attolia; and an issue of Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine), my journal, a notebook for if I get the urge to continue the story I've been writing for a damn month, my ipod, and a deck of cards. That should quell the usual awkward camping moments, like the "it's too late to do anything but I'm not tired yet" portion of the evening, which happens after dinner and after sitting at the campfire until it gets dark, and the "I'm sweaty and tired and all hiked out but it's not even close to dinner-time yet" portion of the day. I'm sure there are more awkward moments I could list but I need to finish packing so that we can at least leave before lunch tomorrow. Yeah, we are so organized.
