Random life blurt
On my walk down the hill from work, I passed a mismatched pile of boxes and plastic crates filled with books. On the first box was a sign that read "FREE Today's Readers are Tomorrow's Leaders". And how could I resist? There was some Zane Grey, a scattering of Bobsey Twin and Trixie Belden mysteries, all of which I passed over. [Aren't you proud of my restraint? :D]
What I did carry home:
~The Family Treasury of Children's Stories, Book Three We had a bunch of similar compilation books when I was young. They have poems, snips from longer novels, non-fiction [both history and science based] and short stories in them. This one has both Kon Tiki and a section of Call of the Wild in it, as well as bits from the Odyssey, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Gulliver's Travels,Treasure Island, Robinson Crusoe [my favorite!], Tom Sawyer *and* Huck Finn... poetry-wise it includes Longfellow's Paul Revere's Ride, [one of the first poems I learned to recite as a child] AND Sandburg's Fog. WHEEEEEE!
~Stephen King: The Second Decade. King Lit Crit. wooooot! I read the chapter on Skeleton Crew as I walked home - it looks quite promising and discusses several of my favorite King novels, including the early Dark Tower novels. Now my fingers are itching to snag It for a re-read...
~What's O'Clock by Amy Lowell. I read a couple of snips of verse as I waited at the intersection downtown. So far she seems to fit the critics descriptions - a mediocre, overly sentimental poet. Oh well, you can't win 'em all.
~Two vintage books that I picked up solely to break apart into collages: Gems of Song for the Sunday School and In a Chinese Garden. the second is particularly yummy - it's a letterpress edition printed on heavy linen paper with deckled edges. Num,num,num!
And the last bit... A TV Guide from August 28- September 3 2005. It's a LOST exclusive! preview for Season Two issue with Yunjin, Dom, Evie and Jorge on the cover and a mini CD. I might be a little too excited about that find.
I definitely re-newed my blackbird merit badges though. :D
