That was the age of the girls I was working with in sparks and brownies a few years ago. At that age, they're still learning to read - some will be able to read picture books, some may be thinking of moving up to very short chapter books without pictures or with fewer illustrations, not on every page. School would be one of the biggest parts of their lives, how they get along with their teachers, whether or not they're being bullied, etc. If they have a pet, that's a big deal. Parents are still very much their gods - they may rebel against their parents authority, but those rebellious tantrums do not at that stage come to anything but a time out in the corner. Their parents are still bigger and stronger than them, and they cannot hope to overcome an adult in a physical confrontation, so that's out. Video games would be big with most kids, especially a few years into the future. Almost every kid has a gaming system, be it the Wii, playstation, or x-box - the only question is how adult the games they're allowed to play are, and how much the parents allow them to play the games. My brother at that age often had to have the nintendo taken away from him because he would start yelling and screaming at the game when he couldn't beat a level. Tantrums can be dramatic at this age. It's the age kids get smart enough that "because I said so" and "because I'm the mom" doesn't cut it anymore, and parents who pull that end up with problems because their kids just aren't that stupid anymore. They want to understand the world, and why things are the way they are, and they're getting old enough to start to understand the reasons behind the rules. But they will still try to challenge their parent's authority with tantrums, testing boundaries.

That's all I can think of right now - will let you know if I think of anything else.
