As they reached the vineyards the Doctor's discomfort had reached its peak. Had he really walked all this way without offering Martha an explanation to Donna's apparent amnesia? He did try. Not so much did he say anything, but he thought about saying something. It was hard enough for him to admit the truth of the matter to himself; that he never intended to talk about Donna to anyone. It was much easier that way. Just turn and walk away. After this, no one has to ever know. She's gone and forgotten me, and I've forgotten her, too. His inner exhaustion ended the minute he had a clear oversight of the valley below. "I can't see anything," he answered. Which wasn't entirely true. His night vision was keen, and Donna and Edie Sedgwick were nowhere in sight.
"What if something else got here before we did?" Martha fretted. Another unicorn, maybe, or something worse. Though she didn't see any bloodstains on the grass, which...was almost comforting, in a strange way, because no signs of a struggle meant that they hadn't been kidnapped or eaten while they were still conscious.
Or maybe someone else in the castle had just arrived before they had, and taken a different route, and Martha was being overly pessimistic. That was perfectly possible - though she was admittedly going to be fairly pissed off if it turned out they'd come all the way out here for nothing.
The Doctor gave Martha a concerned look, but said nothing. If something had happened to Donna, no doubt he was responsible. He thought it very much unlikely that Donna's appearance here was exclusive of his own. He rubbed his chin restlessly, considering the situation. "Martha, there's something I need to --" He paused, taking in a shaky breath, and stood momentarily stunned by the lack of oxygen his lungs were receiving.
He cleared his throat, gladly interrupting himself. "Martha, are you feeling all right?"
Martha furrowed her brow, looking a little confused. "Well, I'm a little tired, what with digging a unicorn gravej and all, and I could sure use a bath, but other than that, I'm fine. Why d'you ask?" Did she look like there was something wrong with her? Or was it just his way of continuing to put off telling her what had happened to Donna?
