Annie was lost in her own world. She was walking through the halls, looking into the middle distance with only enough of her present to keep from stumbling over the carpet or walking smack into a wall. Something else, maybe some internal radar, sensed Gene's presence before she saw him - and when she did see him? It was a shock to her system to say the least.
The last time they'd met, they'd decided to take a look at the outbuildings together. It exhilarated Annie no end, for where else could he, a DCI, and she, a WDC, have gone off on an investigation on their own save for this remarkable, frightening place? Sadly, their trip had ended with the nightmare of Gene's death, and had been prolonged by Annie's unrelenting guilt. It was that scene out in the open field, Gene being trampled and gored, that plagued her now, even when he was standing - living, breathing, existing - not ten yards from her. Gene stopped in his tracks, jerked out of the exhilarating reverie he'd been in, summoned back to reality by hearing his name - and there she was, Annie Cartwright (Tyler, some small part of his brain insisted). He gave her a smile that was much more predatory than it had any right to be, still half under the spell of the power that was singing through his veins. "Annie, love," he greeted her. "Y' shouldn' be walkin' on your own like that, y'know. You never know what you might find out here."
She had to swallow hard to keep herself from crying right there at the sound of his voice; it was a sound she certainly never though she'd hear again. She tried on a smile, knowing it looked rather false, and began to answer. "Oh, you know how I am, Guv: always turnin' up places I shouldn't be."
Annie had to bite her tongue right there to keep some wild apology from spilling forth. What if he didn't remember what happened? Would she reopen old wounds by bringing it up? And what if he did remember? Surely he'd blame her - his death fell squarely on her shoulders after all.
"Like a bad penny," he drawled. "C'mon, Cartwright, what're you doin' out 'ere, then? Off t' make yourself a spot o' brekkie?" Gene smirked at her. "Fancy makin' us a bacon butty, too?" He only now realised that, in fact, he was hungry, and a cuppa and a bacon butty sounded brilliant - and that's what plonk was for, wasn't it?
Speaking of which..."There's another plonk 'ere, Shaz Granger. Think you oughta meet up wi' 'er sometime, sorta...show 'er around an' the lot. Y'know, plonk solidarity an' all that."
