Lily of the Valley -- Purity, the return of happiness, Ivy -- Fidelity, friendship, marriage, blue violets-- loyalty, modesty, humility, snowball-- thoughts of heaven...no, no...not thoughts of heaven, that won't do. Might offend a fallen angel? Not sure, shan't risk it...ah periwinkles, for happy memories...

Basil ran through the list of flowers and their proper meanings as he snipped stems from each of the noted plants and dropped them into his basket. He was planning on doing a still life of flowers in a vase. He thought they might be more permenant than the flowers themselves, a better offering for the intended recipient. Something that would last if Basil disappeared. Or died again. He shivered and buried the thought. He was warm and surrounded by the smell of green and living things. He would not think of Death. He would think only of painting, and of the careful choosing of a subject.

White roses, the sign of purest love. Better than yellow roses for friendship. Yellow roses might look like a rejection. Yes, white roses. Lovely...

He hummed tunelessly as he worked, paying little attention to his surroundings.
