Dorian had never fought an addiction before. He had always yielded to them. Because that's what Harry said to do. That the only way to get rid of temptation was to yield to it. So he had rising rising and falling tides of addictions and obsessions.
But he could not go back to Issack. Plagued now by anxiety and the phantom memory pains, he was too afraid to go back for the blood he needed. So he had begun again to move restlessly from his room to the library, trailing an eternal wreath of blue, opiated cigarette smoke and leaving his gin tumblers all over. Unable (he imagined) to die of old age, he wondered if he would read every book on the dusty shelves in the course of his captivity. Once this occurred to him, he vaguely thought about drowning himself in the moat.
He'd taken to completely avoiding Basil, knowing the painter would ask questions about him, about how sick he was. And he just couldn't explain. And Basil seemed taken enough with his own occupations and bad dreams.
So once again Dorian sat down on the sofa in the library with his bottle of gin and his case of cigarettes, not even bothering to brush his hair or put on shoes, and curled up to read.
