The door burst open behind her. The sudden rush in movement breaking the stillness in the room easy, like an alarm cutting into your sleep. The room should have been empty. That's how he thought of it anyway, before rushing in to nothing in particular. Just a simple plain ol' kitchen, with simple kitchen things. Maybe he'd have some tea or check the refrigerator for notices. But he'd never get that far now. He didn't need to see her face to know. The back of her head was enough. Anything would have been enough, he thought. Her presence had always been indisputable.

There she was. Rose Tyler. Dead six months. And sitting in the kitchen having a bowl of... chocolate chip ice cream.

The Doctor's eyes widened, as he fought to form the words his mind struggled to create. It had been half a second since he opened the kitchen door and barged in, but it felt like ages. It felt like time was slipping away. And it felt like if he didn't say something right now; she'd slip away, too.

"Rose," he whispered.

Rose jumped up, nearly knocking the bowl of ice cream off the table. The sleep deprived girl wasn't sure if this was part of her dream or not. She heard the message he left on the phone awhile back, but he never responded. The last time she saw him, was back at the hospital, before she died ( ... )

Logically, he knew that this place had the unnatural ability to restore those who were fatally injured. And logically still, there wasn't any reason in the universe that Rose wouldn't be one of those lucky people.

But he saw her die.

And there was nothing logical about it. It was final and permanent, as death was and the small hope that she would return like all the others had extinguished the moment he held her lifeless body in his arms.

Here she was now, not nearly as bright-eyed and full of life as the Doctor liked to remember her. She looked tired and troubled, but she was here. She had been restored like the Master. Like Reinette. He didn't know what to say. He felt like a fool. Like he hadn't believed in her. But none of that mattered now.

"Where have I been?" he repeated and stepped towards her. He wanted to hug her, but something made him stop. She seemed tense and unsure. "Rose, I..." he began and then searched with his eyes for the words to continue. "I thought you were dead," he swallowed. "I mean really really dead. I ( ... )

That was it, she couldn't hold back any longer. It was only a matter of seconds before Rose's arms flung around the Doctor's neck and she was hugging him. How could she not?

"Came back, like the others," she whispered. "Didn't remember most of it at first, but eventually did." It was scary when she first came back, but thankfully Harry was there to help her.

She let the hug linger on for longer then usual. After everything that had happened to her she just needed this; a friendly face and someone she knew she could trust.

Rose pulled back, her eyes met with his. "I've missed you. Got in all sorts of trouble while you were gone." Which was something she still needed to find out. "So what happened? Mean, been back for months now and you've been no where in sight." So much had happened since the last time she saw the Doctor.

He wrapped his arms around her, holding her gently at first and then more securely as she spoke. Of course she came back like the others, it made so much sense and here in his arms, he could finally believe it.

He smiled just slightly, as she pulled away, but it was difficult to tell whether it was at the trouble she hinted at or the fact that she said she had missed him. "Ohhh, well it's a long story, Rose." His smile widened. "Look at you! It's a miracle you're even standing there," he noted and tucked his hands away in his pockets.

The Doctor looked her up and down. "Trouble? You? Should I act surprised or just ask what kind?" He rocked back onto his heels and then feeling especially spirited, he added with a wink and a grin, "Something exciting, I hope..."

"Always a long story with you, isn't it?" She smiled. Oh how she missed the days that she traveled with him.

"Might as well say the same for you, all of us really. Ever figure out how that works? Us coming back and such?" Whole place never made much sense and Rose figured by now, they'd never fully understand all of it.

"Oh you know..." she looked up at him and gave him the 'innocent' look. "Little bit of each kind of trouble. Excitin' bit was travelin' back to the one time period, seems like its the garden of Eden only Eve was dead, least it seemed like that. Group of us went and explored some. Don't know what to think, mean you told me before religion and god wasn't real..." That was a thought that had been bothering her for some time now. She always trusted and believed what the Doctor said, but there was so much that told her otherwise on that subject.

The Doctor thought he had worked out what about this place allowed people to seemingly come back from the dead, but after he heard Isaack's voice on his phone- he was no longer sure. It was possible that someone may have dug up his body and removed the device he had strapped to his wrist- a device that was supposed to prevent his return- or it was possible it never worked at all. So, he just smiled that question away. "Long stories, Rose, are the best," he pointed out ( ... )

"True, but we've got all the time, Doctor. Don't think we'll be leavin' anytime soon." She said with a slight smile, but was more curious then ever. Not that she wasn't grateful that she didn't die, but she knew that couldn't be good; people coming back from the dead.

"Or, maybe he's some sort of alien, yeah?" It did seem like most human stories related back to aliens somehow. The ghosts that time in Cardiff were really aliens, the werewolf was really an alien. "It was just strange, Doctor. Mean, Adam was there and all and ..." She just shook her head, it was a bit much. "Sides that, I sort've umm well met an angel.." She didn't exactly when to tell the Doctor about "Sam". "Said his father was god...Though, I don't exactly think he was the good kind of angel."

The Doctor tensed at the mention of the angel. He had met an angel, too and even then he still didn't believe. It was a powerful being, no doubt, but heavenly?

"Could be. I haven't run 'cross him yet," he teased. "Aren't you going to offer me a bowl?" he said, deflecting from the subject with a wave of his hand toward the ice cream. He paused a beat. "So, what's the bad kind of angel?"

He was almost afraid of her answer.

She laughed, "course." She pushed her bowl over to him. "Finish mine if you want, not really in the mood for anymore." It was hard for to eat what she even did, her thoughts were just too clouded these days.

"One that doesn't seem good." She didn't exactly know how to put it. "Said god was his father and he was an angel, showed me his wings and all. Seemed great at first, but then," Rose took a deep breath, this was harder then she thought it would be. "He changed. Started actin' different, finally started to show his true colors and true agenda. I think he might have been more of a demon if that's possible?" She still wasn't sure if she believed in angels and demons, but it was hard not to these days. "Think he was takin' advantage of me, usin' me to get what he wanted." She hated to admit that, but it was the truth.

This didn't seem at all a reasonable time for ice cream, which was saying a lot, because the Doctor loved ice cream most times. But as the conversation turned more serious, the distraction of something so carefree was welcomed.

He walked over to the table and sat down on the edge, listening to Rose as she talked. He got about as far as picking up the spoon to his lips when she admitted that the man may have been taking advantage of her.

The Doctor frowned. "Wanted?" He paused. "Wanted like... wanted what?" he asked again, ice cream dripping from his spoon and wrinkles of confusion spreading across his face. He was more concerned and baffled about this than Rose's outright accusation that 'Sam' may have been some kind of demon.

"Y'know..." She just looked at him, hoping that certain things he'd just get without her outright saying. "Sort of things bloke use girls for. That, and to get to others. Made me trust him, made me talk to others on his behalf. There was this meetin' we all had, could tell Jack didn't like him, course I took Sam's side..." Rose never really got to find out more about that, but there was something that Jack didn't like about Sam, she should've seen it then.

"Mean, at times I wondered bout him, but guess I only saw the best in him, thought I saw a different side to him...that he could be good." She really did trust the guy, but deep down she always knew there was something strange there.

"He had all these sort of powers and tried to impress me. Suppose I got a bit memorized by him." Sometimes she was just too nice for her own good.

The Doctor returned the spoon, which met the bowl with a hash clang just as soon as Rose had finished her explanation. His eyes narrowed and his voice took on a calculated calm, which didn't easily hide the anger he was feeling. "And... where is this 'Sam' now?"

He pushed himself from the edge of the table, a subconscious move which reflected how protective he was feeling of Rose. Whatever this Sam was, he didn't want it coming anywhere near her. Jack knew it. And now so did he.

"He's gone. Been gone for awhile now. Wasn't sure at first, but just know he's not here anymore." It comforted her a bit to see that the Doctor was still worried about her and protective.

"Sides my dreams. Been havin' these um nightmares lately. Don't know anymore if they're real or not. Can't tell if it's him or this place." Sam did have a lot of power, what if he could somehow still reach her from wherever he was. "I'm scared," she finally admitted.
