Gene had tried to ignore the niggling sensation in the back of his mind, but it had gradually been getting stronger and stronger. Gut instinct told him not to listen to it, and nine time out of ten his gut instinct was right. Yet, somehow he found himself getting into the Quattro away from the castle towards the forest. He parked up and got out and that nagging feeling only grew stronger.
Ah sod it, he'd come this far, might as well see what the bloody hell was beckoning him... As he got deeper into the forest the mouth of the cave began to come into view. Luckily, no unicorns came into view with it. The grass seemed greener, the sky bluer. Peaceful, like. Almost kind of poofy. Poofy and weird. Were... were the bleedin’ trees moving?
That should've been enough of a warning to get the hell out of there, yet Gene continued onwards. All common sense seemed to flitter away as he was further drawn to the cave. He headed down the stairs, following the sound of an all too familiar shrill laughter.
The cavern beneath greeted him with a wall of mirrors. But the mirrors didn't show the reflection of the well weathered forty-nine year old copper, they showed the skinny frame of a
nineteen year old flatfoot with half of his face missing. Barely a boy, a boy whose life had been cut short. The boy in the mirrors mimicked Gene's actions.
"BANG!!" A voice shouted out suddenly, actually causing Gene to jump, before that shrill laughter started up again. "All alone, Gene, all alone again! Look at you, pathetic, weak. You're a nobody, Hunt, nobody."
Jim Keats. That voice. There were few people who could truly get under Gene's skin, but that man was one of them. That man was the one man that had managed to leave Gene beaten and broken. Jim Keats had taken everything Gene had known, everything he had built up and tore it down to the ground. Jim had revealed the truth and almost cost Gene his team.
It was almost too much to take. Gene pulled out his gun and shot wildly at the mirrors his mind had created. Gunfire rang out throughout the cave.
