Dairine looked around the gardens appreciatively. They were extravagant, of course, but something of their grandeur reminded her of Roshaun's palace. Which really wasn't what she needed to be thinking about.

She reached behind her and picked up Spot, then turned to Jack. "Shall we?" she said, starting off in a random direction. Hopefully they'd stumble upon a helpful person shortly.

"That force field thing they have set up," she said. "I wonder how they're powering it."

"Could be any of a number of different methods, in this era," Jack mused, strolling alongside her, his eyes still scanning the gardens for anyone useful to approach. "Atmospheric bubbles were pretty common even by my time; they're a useful way to colonise worlds with unbreathable atmospheres - or no atmospheres." He gazed out at the horizon for a moment, his expression unfathomable. "I never expected Earth to be one of those, though. That's not how it's supposed to be."

"Yeah," Dairine said. She was still thinking about the ways you could set up a force field and what sort of effect they'd have on space travel. Sure, she could just bounce from one planet to the next and she could carry her own air with her, but it was still something fun to think about.

"Although things looked pretty rough in that near future time period, too," she continued. "Clearly they got worse."

((OOC: God, I'm sorry, here I am trying to be good and tag more often and I forgot you'd tagged and it was my turn! *smacks forehead*))

"I think that must be when this happened," Jack said soberly, with a gesture out towards the barrier. "When the planet became uninhabitable. Well, shortly after that period, at least, since at that point it was just barely habitable. I don't know how long those people could have survived, though, not without the ability to grow crops. It's like the extinction of the dinosaurs all over again. And it's not supposed to be like that.

"...Which I guess does make it more likely that this whole place - in all its eras - is an artificial creation."

"Yeah," Dairine said, wondering not for the first time this was all there was to this universe--just this one planet (if it was even a planet). And once again, she wondered why the Powers that Be had sent her and not Nita. Nita was the one who knew about universes and kernels and all of that stuff. But clearly Nita had other stuff she had to be doing.
