The Master had been monitoring his mobile, waiting for word of Donna. He was frankly beginning to think that there were too many ways to get to the Doctor, and although he had the pipsqueak following this one, he found he didn't quite trust servants as much as he had in the past.

Also, the promise of a potential means of transport was too alluring to pass up. For obvious reasons.

He walked quickly through the castle and its grounds, searching for the maze Donna had spoken of, and hoping that for once, just for once, he'd beat the Doctor and get there first.

He got to the doorway of a room filled with portraits, a little out of breath, and immediately his expression soured as he realized he was certainly not alone.

"Oh, for Rassilon's sake," he muttered.

The Doctor cringed, and not even wanting to turn around, he reluctantly did, because standing there frozen would just make things that much more awkward. At this point he'd rather it were the night watchman with his flashlight and demeaning disapproval of touching and yes the Van Gogh was a forgery, and the Doctor didn't care what he said.

At this point he would rather it were Sam. Or Satan. Or Hitler.

He gave his best glare, narrowing his eyes into something fierce. "What are you doing here?" Less a question, and more of an order to leave kindly disguised as curiosity.

"Don't suppose you own the place, do you," the Master neatly hid his shock by swaggering into the room, idly correcting a painting that hung slightly askew. Keeping a wide berth between himself and the Doctor.

"Oooh, all these buttons," he breathed, eying the Doctor. "I bet you'd be staring at them for hours, trying to decide which one to press, if I hadn't interrupted your little look-see. You always did have trouble committing."

"Actually." He removed his glasses and folded them. "I've already pressed one." The Doctor put them away in his pocket, rightly assuming he wouldn't be examining anymore paintings anytime soon.

The Doctor watched him, somehow satisfied by his minor correction to something that probably wasn't supposed to be quite that literal anyway. "'Suppose you're trying to find a way out," he said finally and definitely with as much disinterest as he could manage.
