I just read Christina's LJ. She posted an entry about being a Red Sox fan.
She said:
"And when I was watching the game with some friends I was very cynical about them winning and they said "spoken like a true Red Sox fan." At this point, I'm just going to accept it. I mean, I'm not going to start going to their games or cheering for them in Yankee infested places, but I suppose they are more my team than any team. (That, and the Phillies suck) They are a very skilled team... and yet inevitable losers. They aren't even an underdog. They are merely 2nd Place. Super great. Very talented. And yet for some reason, they inexplicably will always lose. They will never come in first. I can identify with this, I suppose. :P I've got all the right parts and yet something doesn't quite come together."
My response:
"YES! Really though, spoken like a true Red Sox fan! I was reading the NYTimes yesterday and there was an article headline that read "Do Red Sox Fans Enjoy Their Pain?" The answer is an undoubted yes. We love it. I totally agree with everything you've said and I am a die hard fan. Its true. Its not that we're the underdog. In fact in the number of times we've played the Yankees, we've won more games. The Yankees have just won the more important ones which leave us broken in the post season. But it brings us all together as fans. We unite to celebrate victory, and come together even closer as we mourn our inevitable defeat. I mean, think about what would happen if we did win. If we won the series I'm sure something in the universe wold turn inside out, resulting in cataclysmic chaos. And if we went on to win the series, all of existence would implode. Up would become down, black would become white, existence would become inexistence. We cannot play with the universe in such a way. We know this. Therefore, while we celebrate in our victories, we know we can never allow ourselves to win, for to do so would negate existence. Much like the responsibilities of Jesus or Spiderman, no one can know, and we must not allow ourselves that which we hold dearest. We've saved the world by losing. Its just how it has to be."
