Inspired by discussions with arabian and, more specifically, a conversation with butterfly, during which she got certain quotes stuck in my head. I honestly believe that up until filming episode 7, Stefan/Elena was THE couple for the show. Then they saw that final scene with Damon and Elena and everything kind of crystallized that THIS is the story, they are THE couple. Because the next episode you have Lexi talking about it being "real" and it's obviously supposed to apply to Stefan and Elena. And, of course, episode 8 would have been written already, and probably 9 broken down, which brings us to 10. The Stefan/Elena love scene that plays over a song that equates their relationship to how cutting makes one numb. Stefan and Elena getting about two seconds of bliss before Elena found the Katherine picture. (Even Damon/Elena got a bit longer.)

Then comes episode 11 and suddenly "real" is about Damon and Elena, and that carries through to episode 14 and even now. And then, even more than that, you have the reveal that every sweet, wonderful, romantic, cute thing with Stefan and Elena was a set-up by Stefan, a lie because he knew her, he followed her, studied her, searched out everything about her and they played her with all of that knowledge because she was his good parts version of Katherine.

So, yeah, for me, it hit them in episode 07, and then began to play out in episode 11, that Damon and Elena are THE couple.

Yes. What you say makes a lot of sense. They started connecting in 1.03, but 1.07 was probably when I first felt like there was real sexual tension between them (instead of just plain ol' tension, lol). Not to mention that he did something for her that Stefan couldn't do which I like to think extends into other areas as well.

(And you're forgiven for not doing other things, this was lovely!)
