So I'm listening to the Amelie soundtrack, which I haven't done in a good while. I'm drinking iced tea (Arizona) and there's a picture of Julie on my desk. It's a picture of us from her going-away party.

I wonder what it's like to do something like that. It seems like it would take so much bravado to just jump into a new life in another country, most likely not in a language you use as much as your mother tongue.

And I think of movies with foreign exchange students, and they're either bitchy or overtly sexual. Or portrayed as stupid simply because their english isn't perfect. Where is the sympathy for someone who takes such a big risk? Is there a movie where these characters are portrayed a little more realistically? There were several exchange students at Kamiakin last year. I only truly befriended one. I feel bad for the others who seemed to wander around campus, quite lost. Rather like it was my fault. And probably, partially, it was.
