Mulder peered around the corner, staring down the length of the alley. He'd heard a woman's scream, followed by the sound of people running, but had quickly lost sight of them. Just when he'd decided to keep checking more alleys, he heard the sound of fighting and ran towards it.

He arrived in time to see a small blonde girl slam a wooden stake into a man's heart. The resulting burst of dust was impressive, and if Mulder had ever questioned his move to Sunnydale, California, that display was more than enough to convince him that this was the place for him.

The blonde girl dusted herself off and replaced the stake inside her leather jacket. Mulder had heard so much about this legendary slayer, but he hadn't really believed it until he saw her with his own eyes. He'd had her on the same plane as leprechauns and unicorns - fascinating but not likely to really exist. But, here he was, watching her do what she did best. Over the entire past week, he'd been keeping up with her exploits thanks to the demon underground he'd quickly tapped into, but this was the first chance he'd had to see her in action.

Before he could step out of the shadows, though, she turned around, arms crossed in front of her chest. "Okay, creepy stalker guy. Show yourself."

Mulder blinked and looked behind him.

"I'm talking to you, Stretch. Tall guy in the shadows."

Stretch?

Stepping forward, Mulder put his hands out, palms upward. "I'm not armed."

"Wouldn't matter if you were," she shrugged, all business. "Why are you following me?"

"I know how this must look--"

"Good, so you won't be all that surprised if my fist meets your face in the next three seconds if I don't get an answer."

Mulder swallowed and tried to smile. For a such a diminuitive figure, the blonde packed a hell of an intimidation factor.

"I moved to Sunnydale because of all the supernatural activity here and, of course, your name came up. I just wanted to see you in action." Even as he said it, he knew it sounded strange and more than a little ridiculous.

"You moved here because of the creature features?" She narrowed her eyes and immediately took an offensive stance. "So what's the plan? Do a little chanting over the hellmouth, sacrifice a few virgins and achieve unimaginable power?"

Mulder blinked at her. "Virgins?" He shook his head and took a step back. "No, I'm just here to investigate all of the paranormal activity in the area. It's what I used to do in DC with the Bureau."

"The Bureau..." Frowning, she dropped her arms to her sides. "You work for the government?"

"Used to."

"You used to work for the government investigating..." Lips pursed, she nodded. "So you were part of the Initiative."

"The Ini... Um..." Mulder narrowed his eyes and shook his head. "No. I'm not sure what that is."

"So why are you here?"

"I told you. I'm interested in the supernatural, and Sunnydale has the most instances of strange phenomena I've ever seen." He smiled brightly. "It's the perfect place for me to live and do a little investigating. If I can help solve..."

The expression on the young woman's face would have made Mulder laugh if he wasn't afraid she'd break his kneecaps. She could definitely give Scully a run for her money in the incredulous look department. He felt as if he were being sized up, though, and after a long, regarding look, she shook her head and cracked a small smile.

"I don't know if you're for real, but there are some people you should meet, just in case you are."

"Really?" Mulder perked up considerably at that. "That's great."

"Mmm hmm," she said, starting to walk away, obviously expecting Mulder to follow. "And there's still that fist to the face thing if you're playing me in any way."
