"You aren't going to stay?" Ash asked with mock disappointment. "I could tell you all about the--"
"No, gotta be going," Sawyer said with unseemly haste. Get the kid here back to camp. Someone else will be along eventually with more food."
Sawyer and Sue ringed out, leaving Ash alone in the tunnel again. (Ah, blessed silence. Given a choice between solitude and Sawyer's company, I'll take solitude every time,) Ash thought. (And people think I don't have any social skills.) Just the hint of another long, rambling story was enough to drive Sawyer away.
Sue as well, though the shadow of a smile on her lips suggested that she knew what Ash was doing and found it amusing. She was an odd kid, and entirely too serious much of the time in Ash's opinion. But she'd grow up to be a very able adult one day, he was quite sure.
