Rose had been uncuffed and given breakfast, which she gave in and ate. It wasn’t as if they weren’t perfectly capable of drugging her already. Besides, when was the next chance she’d have at eating eggs and bacon? The eggs had the taste of the powdered stuff you got when the refrigerator wasn’t working (or the electric bill was unpaid), and the bacon was very salty. Tinned, she was guessing ( ... )

Ami was nearly finished with her breakfast, more than idly wondering what was being discussed when Jacob and Fisher finally returned. Fisher looked even more sour faced, a feat that Ami would never have thought possible, but Jacob's bearing gave nothing away ( ... )

Seeing Rose was both a wonderful relief and horribly frightening. Hearing the news that Rose delivered made Ami's heart sink. Daisy. They'd killed Daisy, and they were threatening Rose to keep her in line. Ami felt even more adrift and bereft as she hugged her friend; she felt none of what Rose felt, she couldn't sense Rose at all. It was easy to ignore the silence, the lack of mental buzzing in the confines of her "room," but here in the open, with a friend it was painfully obvious that a vital bit of her was missing ( ... )
