[Chloe] Day 17: Into the Dark (tag Veronica)
Chloe collected her backpack and walking stick while Veronica did the same. The backpack contained a couple of bottles of water, some fruit, and other necessities of survival. She liked to think she was capable of learning from other peoples' mistakes and didn't need to make her own. She didn't expect to be gone long or go far, but...you never knew. Carrying water and food she didn't expect to need was a small price to pay for security.
The backpack also contained several pens and a couple of notebooks scavenged from the luggage after the crash. Her pride and joy, though, was a hand-held, hand-powered flashlight. It was transparent, the workings clearly visible. Squeezing the handle spun a magnetic disk between some copper wires, generating a current that lit the lightbulb. The light only lasted a couple of seconds, but for as long as you could continue pumping the handle, you had a bright electric light that didn't require batteries.
Chloe sometimes wondered who it had belonged to, and why he--or she--had had it. Had he been an outdoorsman? A survivalist? Did he simply believe in being prepared when possible? Or maybe it had been purchased for a child as an instructional toy. Whatever the reason, Chloe was just glad to have it. It meant that while she and Veronica would carry a couple of torches with them, with any luck they wouldn't need to light them.
