Chloe had to stifle the urge to pepper Isabel with questions. The woman either didn't know any more than she'd already said or was told to keep the details to herself for now. Chloe didn't doubt that Isabel was telling the truth: they'd know what had happened as soon as the big cheeses figured it out.

Still, the habits of years nagged at her--until Rose dropped her bombshell question.

Chloe felt her eyes get wider. "That's...a really good question," Chloe said. Even coming from Smallville, meteor freak capital of the world, Chloe hadn't believed in the supernatural until fairly recently. Superhumans, yes. The supernatural, no.

Then she, Lois and Lana had been possessed by...well, ghosts, Chloe supposed. The ghost of witches, but ghosts. So she'd had to deal with the reality of life-after-death, in some form. At least if you had enough mojo to make it happen.

Then she met two Grim Reapers. They didn't look anything like what she'd have imagined, or act like it either. But a month on the island was plenty to convince her they were for real, and that everyone became a ghost, at least briefly.

"I don't know," Chloe said. "I'm not sure that Daisy or George would know. If they ever ran into something like this before, they never said anything."

"I don't know what will happen," Isabel said. The obvious worst case scenario was the entirely plausible idea that Charlie would swap out of Shannon's body and attempt to return to his own, but with nowhere to go his soul, or spirit, or self, or whatever it was which had been swapped, would simply have nowhere to go and Charlie would die. Charlie's body had been completely destroyed. Still not the time to share that with the others.

"We will have to make sure somebody has told everybody looking into a solution to see if they can make sure that Charlie will be okay." Even if he does have to end up looking like a girl for the rest of his life. At least he'll have a life.

"So... we could be looking at two people dying from one death? I mean if Shannon's gone to the other side, or whatever, and Charlie's mind tried to go into a dead body... Or maybe Shannon goes home and Charlie dies. Or Charlie is stuck in Shannon's body... None of them seem fair." Rose didn't like that. But the universe was rarely fair. It just was. The Doctor taught her that.

"But the other thing to worry about is we have a killer among us. Right? I mean, an animal would have been noticed, and an accident would be announced right away. So it has to be murder, yeah?"

"I...don't know about that," Chloe said.

"I mean, if they thought there was a killer among us, I think they'd have said so--if only to warn us to watch one another." Chloe thought furiously for a moment.

"I mean, maybe it was suicide...." Chloe trailed off when Isabel shook her head.

"Or--there's that...smoke monster," Chloe almost mumbled. It felt silly even saying such a thing, but it was no joke. It had killed the pilot of Flight 815 shortly after they'd arrived on the island. Nobody had seen it since as far as Chloe knew, but that didn't mean it wasn't still around.

((OOC: Has anyone mentioned the smoke monster to Isabel yet? May and Jon ran into it the same day she showed up, but I definitely think she was kept out of that briefing.))

May frowned. "The smoke monster? No way. If that thing had even come near the building, we'd have heard it. It's not exactly stealthy."

There was a pause, and she realized that everyone was staring at her. "Uh, Jon and I kind of had a run-in with it when we were on recon a while back. That was around when we first settled in here."

Rose shivered at that last suggestion. "The Others did say it feared the beach but was comfortable in the interior." She looked down at Oorie, who seemed to be more comfortable on the makeshift leash and surrounded by people.

"But wouldn't we have heard it? It's kinda loud and destructive."

"Yeah, that's a good point," Chloe said.

She remembered waking up in the middle of that first night on the island. Everyone had. A god-awful roaring in the distance and trees shaking and collapsing near the treeline.

She'd thought it had to be a dinosaur or something. A monster made of smoke seemed anticlimactic--until you remembered that it was perfectly capable of killing you, and it could follow you into places no dinosaur could. And...it was loud.

"Well, I guess all we know for sure is that we don't know," Chloe said. It was frustrating to be left in the dark, but probably nobody else knew much more. She'd just have to wait.

"So," Chloe said to Isabel, "you said something about coffee?"

((OOC: Oops. I didn't pick up on Ripley's question about the sword. My bad. Need to do it here.))

As Ripley asked to inspect the sword, May saw the expression on her own face and could guess what Hiro was saying. "I'd ask him. I gather it's pretty important. I didn't damage it," she added for Hiro's benefit, hoping that even if he couldn't understand her he'd get the gist.

May frowned at Rose's comment about the Others. From what she'd seen during the trip to restore Tara's magic, the Others weren't all there to begin with. They made River look stable - and she hated to even think that, because River was in pretty good shape for someone who couldn't turn off mind-reading at all. "Why would it fear the beach? Would it not be able to attack near water? Or in open spaces?"

She was throwing out random questions, and the murder probably might have nothing to do with the smoke monster at all, but it was good to be speculating about something instead of mulling over the death or the current body-switching situation. "Hey, you've actually encountered it before," she said to Rose and Chloe. "Did it ever come out during the day? Has it ever attacked out in the open, when it's light out, or was it always just smashing down trees?"

For some reason, coffee sounded really good.

ENTER KENZAKI.

Kenzaki felt he was slowly getting used to Miho's body. Enough that he was able to help Sukotto-san* before he wandered off in the direction of the storeroom to pick up some of his stuff. He became aware something strange was going on, and he saw that people were starting to be herded into the other cafeteria. Curious, he headed in, hoping to get some answers.

"Hello?" he asked in his native language. "What's going on?"

"Smoke monster?" Isabel asked, heading for the kitchen area. "And yes, I did mention coffee." She took ground coffee from the freezer, pleased to see it had been kept in the right place, and spooned a generous quantity into the coffee machine before adding water in the tank, switching the whole thing on and putting the jug in place. It hummed and clicked and began to make gurgling noises as the water slowly heated up.

She started hunting for clean mugs as she let one ear follow the conversation in the main part of the cafeteria.

"Someone was killed. We're yammerin' on to keep from thinkin' on ti." Rose offered in Japanese.

"Smoke thing comes out during the day. I don't know if it's the water. Maybe. Too bad we don't have squirt guns." Rose sat down and began to pet Oorie, who was still trembling a bit.

"I don't suppose it's always smashing down trees, or the island would only be so much kindling by now, yeah?"

Chloe was leaning against the counter listening to the conversation going on around her when it struck her. The question of whether Shannon or Charlie was dead, of whether Shannon could in essence evict Charlie and survive the death of his body had been niggling at her. It was a horrible mental puzzle, made worse by the knowledge that no matter what happened, one of them was doomed.

(If Charlie weren't dead, they could just--)

Chloe stood up abruptly. Charlie was dead. But nobody else was. Why couldn't George or Daisy just swap people around? Daisy had reaped Ami when she needed help during the raid on the bunker. Hell, Daisy had taken out a bunch of bad guys too--and none of them had been dead when she did it.

"Chloe? Something wrong?"

"No," Chloe said, though she paid no attention to who had spoken. "I just...I remembered something I have to do," she said. Chloe didn't want to raise any false hopes. If this idea panned out, they could get everyone back to normal pretty quickly; if not, no need to mention it.

"I'll...be back in a few minutes," Chloe said, heading for the door.

EXIT CHLOE

"Chloe?" May asked as Chloe shot to her feet. You could almost see the proverbial light bulb appearing over her head. "Something wrong?"

"No," Chloe said, though she paid no attention to who had spoken. "I just...I remembered something I have to do."

May stood up to follow her as Chloe bolted out, but then thought better of it. If Chloe did have a brainstorm, and it didn't pan out, there was no point in pursuing her. If something was actually wrong, well, best to keep everyone calm, away from the action and near an exit. She exchanged looks with Rose and Isabel, both of whom looked perplexed as well. "I have no idea. Anyone take cream or sugar?" she asked, turning to the fridge. Coffee was a relatively safe activity, for now.

"Sugar, please," Isabel said. Something had definitely occurred to Chloe, and her weak explanation of having forgotten something was something Isabel was familiar with after years of hiding her true nature. "I wonder what Chloe's up to..."

"I wonder what Chloe's up to..." Isabel mused aloud.

Scott glanced up at Ami-in-Blaise. Despite their lack of psionics, he was sure they were wondering the same thing. To May-in-Hiro he said, "Cream and sugar for both of us, please." The caffeine should at least take the edge off of some of House's body's aches.

Even odder than Chloe's exit, was the entrence of Miho in Kenzaki and Molly in River. They were carrying luggage, gym bags and pillow cases.

Miho was already up the stairs and outside.

"What are you doing?" Rose cocked her head.

"Getting ready." Molly replied. "Keeps me calm. Have to move things. Not much time. Oorie's about to chew on the chair leg."

Molly carried her burden's up the stairs. After a few minutes both came back. "Near the edge of the time bubble. Be ready for it."

Molly went back into the hall.

"Alright. Is it just me or has River's body broke Molly?" Rose looked to the others.

Just as Oorie began to gnaw the her chair leg.
