Some time ago I said that it is possible that love is a beast. It was a biased word. I have just thought, though, that a mind with sentience is in want of a direction for its potential that is not being used in self-preservation and possibly the fulfillment of other instincts. Either our parents remain our gods, or we need a replacement. And as rational minds, we need a justification for devotion. The parental command to love God is a useable transition. And of course there is the submerged part of the iceberg, looking around at the arbitrary positions of every individual and taking their cue to comfortably settle in. The classic notions of gathering a soulmate and a religion are the coloring book for these people.
Nathan Leopold said that Richard Loeb was his idea of the Superman. He would do anything for him. Small or large, with or without sacrifice. Nathan Leopold was a thinker, and an individual. Neitzschean philosophy was a sufficient pushing off point for a personal justification of satisfying this want. Of course, this was only said publicly as a way of elaborating on his claim that the murder was Richard's idea and that Nathan was merely obliging. Of course, I assume Leopold knew enough to only use an explanation that was believable, by himself as well as others. I'm going to pretend this next sentence is a pithy summation of the above, and ends the paragraph with a teeny intellectual resonation.
