[Background]
Kurt Hummel was always a bit different. This became incredibly obvious to his father on Kurt's third birthday, when all the boy asked for was a pair of sensible heels. Kurt himself knew that he was different ever since he was five, and he has been having to deal with other kids making fun of him ever since then. When Kurt was six, his mother died. His father raised Kurt well, and the small family is fairly well off due to his car repair shop. But that never stopped the other kids from teasing Kurt. In high school, it was a regular occurrence for Kurt to be thrown in the dumpster by the football team. Only one of the jocks, Finn, ever seemed to disapprove of this practice, but even he never stopped them; he simply offered to hold onto Kurt's expensive designer clothing before he got tossed in. Because of this kindness, though, Kurt ended up developing a crush on Finn.

William McKinley High School's glee club was always a laughing stock around school. To be able to take part in competition, the club needed twelve members; the current club consisted of only one member. Another student by the name of Rachel Berry, upset by the fact that her talent wasn't appreciated, turned the teacher into the principal for inappropriate conduct, getting him fired. Glee club was going to be canceled as well, until another teacher, who had been on the school's award-winning glee club in the past, stepped in to take over. Will Schuester was given until the sectionals competition to change the club into something worthwhile- if the students didn't win the competition, the club would be disbanded due to lack of funding.

Mr. Schuester renamed the group "New Directions", and quickly got his first five members: Rachel, the diva who had gotten the former director fired; Tina, an Asian goth with a stutter; Mercedes, another diva who is very proud of her black heritage; Artie, a boy in a wheelchair; and Kurt. Although all of the students were talented, Rachel immediately took the place as the star due to her talent. But she refused to sing with Artie, forcing Will to try and find another member. He went to the football team to try and convince some of the guys to join, but none were willing. As he was leaving, though, he heard someone singing in the showers. Deciding that he needed Finn to join the glee club, Will blackmailed him into joining, and the club finally had the male lead Rachel required. Shortly after, though, Will quit the school; his wife was expecting their first child, and the hours required by his job were too much of a strain on the family. The kids in glee didn't want the club to be disbanded, though, and pulled together. Just as Will was about to leave, he walked in on New Directions' first successful performance, an amazing rendition of "Don't Stop Believing". After seeing how amazing the kids really were, and not wanting to miss out on this opportunity to help them, Will came back as the director of the glee club.

The club still only had six of the required twelve members, though, so Mr. Schuester decided the club would put on a performance in front of the school to try and get more kids to join. Although the group had no issues with performing in front of the school, none of the members were pleased with the disco song their teacher had picked. Despite their protests, though, Mr. Schue insisted they sing his song in their performance, as it was the song he had performed in glee club when they won the national competition. Due to personal issues he was distracted, and the club took the opportunity to instead perform a song more suited to the school's tastes. Although the student body was very interested in their risque performance of "Push It", many parents were unhappy with such an inappropriate song being performed. The principal of the school agreed with the concerns, but realized after the performance that the group had a great amount of potential. Instead of canceling the club as expected, he instead allowed them to go on, as long as they only performed approved songs. The performance also inspired cheerleaders Quinn, Santana, and Brittany to join the glee club, as Quinn was unhappy with how close Rachel seemed to be getting to Finn (her boyfriend).

After seeing so many other students happily paired off with one another, Mercedes started wanting a relationship herself. Kurt attempted to discourage her, explaining that being in glee meant there was no chance for them. The two became close, always staying together and going places together. The cheerleaders in glee convinced Mercedes that her and Kurt would make a good couple, despite her first thoughts that he was gay, and she began thinking of him like that. But while they were at a car wash fundraiser for glee club, Mercedes asked Kurt if they could make it official that they were dating. He refused, saying that he was already in love with someone else. Mercedes mistook his longing look at Finn and assumed he was talking about Rachel, and threw a rock through his windshield in anger. She later came to apologize and offered to pay him back for the repairs, but he refused as his dad had taken his car away. Mercedes then wished him luck in his relationship with Rachel, but he called her back and confessed that he was, in fact, gay. She told him that he should tell everyone in glee, since they're all friends, but he refused, telling her that he just wasn't confident enough for that.

While Kurt had Tina and Brittany over at his house for some glee practice, his father walked in on them dancing to Beyonce's "Single Ladies" song. They quickly made up a story that Kurt was on the football team as the kicker, and that all of the team danced as some sort of football practice. His father didn't quite believe the story, but was happy that Kurt was playing football and asked for tickets to his first game... Which put Kurt in a difficult situation. Luckily Finn was willing to help him get a chance to try out for the football team, and even helped him practice for it. When he actually came to "audition" for the part, though, the rest of the team wasn't too impressed- and they were even less impressed when he pulled out his music and started dancing to it- but that was quickly forgotten when he actually kicked the ball, making a perfect field goal. Coach Tanaka gave him the position, hoping that finally the team would actually be able to win a game. He also enlisted Mr. Schuester's help in teaching the rest of the team to dance, since it seemed to help Kurt so much. When their next game came around, the team pulled off a new move in order to distract the opposite team- dancing to Kurt's song. It worked, giving the team a chance to win if Kurt could make his field goal. He easily did, yet again with assistance from the song, and the team won the first game in a very long time. The win inspired football players Puck, Mike, and Matt to join glee club, finally giving the club the twelve members required for competition- except for the fact that Rachel quit the club because she felt her talent wasn't being appreciated. Kurt's father was incredibly proud of his son for his win, and Kurt finally had enough confidence to tell his father that he was gay. His father was glad Kurt told him, although he had actually already known.

Without Rachel in the glee club anymore, Will had to find another female lead. He recruited former student April to come and sing with the group, since she had never actually graduated from high school. The rest of the club wasn't too happy with her presence, so Will asked her to try and get on their good sides. To try and win Kurt over, she gave him alcohol to drink (to boost his confidence), as well as a stack of muscle magazines. But when her methods were found out after Kurt threw up all over the guidance counselor's shoes, Will tried to get April to tone it down and sober herself up. She agreed to, but then showed up to the glee club's first performance drunk. After the first song, Will went to confront her and she ended up quitting the club. The kids were then unable to perform their second number- until Rachel returned, after deciding that she didn't really want to be part of the school musical anymore. The group then performed their first real number as a full group- "Somebody to Love" by Queen.

After their performance, the kids weren't too inspired to practice. They had done so well that they really saw no reason to try and improve. To encourage them, Mr. Schuester split them into groups by gender and had them compete with one another. Kurt initially tried to join the girls' team, but was forced to be teamed with the boys. Finn was having trouble performing due to all the stress put on him by Quinn's pregnancy, so he went to the school nurse to get help. There, he was given decongestants to help him stay awake, and after seeing how much they helped him the other boys were quick to get the drugs as well. They easily performed an amazing song, and the girls were concerned about their own win. But Kurt, unhappy because many of his ideas had been rejected by the boys, leaked the secret to the girls' team and helped them get the decongestants from the nurse as well. After their performance, Rachel and Finn both confessed to taking the drugs to Mr. Schuester, which forced the principal to make Coach Sylvester of the cheerleaders the co-leader of the glee club.

Coach Sylvester's real objective was to try and destroy glee club from the inside, to try and restore funding to herself. To do this, she split the club into two groups, claiming hers to be the elite club. To everyone's surprise, instead of picking the cheerleaders and football players, she instead picked the minority students- including Kurt, who she simply referred to as "Gay Kid" (to match the equally insulting names she gave to everyone else, such as "Wheels", "Asian", and "Other Asian") Her plan didn't work as she thought it would, though, and even with her threats to keep the two groups from meeting the kids still organized secret sessions where they could meet up. When Will finally confronted her on it, she ended up stepping down as co-leader and instead decided to only help with the set lists for their competitions.

Mr. Schuester later decided that the group should perform the song "Defying Gravity" from the musical Wicked. Kurt was incredibly excited when he heard this, as he not only loved Wicked but also loved the song. Although the solo was initially given to Rachel, Kurt tried to convince Mr. Schue to give him the part. Will was hesitant, but agreed to let Kurt audition for it when Kurt's father threatened to sue the school over it. In order to make it fair, Mr. Schue decided to have the two singers have a "diva-off", and let the kids vote on who they preferred to have sing the solo. Rachel and Kurt both realized this would simply be a popularity contest, so Kurt got the rest of the club to promise that they would vote for whoever actually sang the song better (since otherwise he would definitely win, due to Rachel's attitude) But after his father got an anonymous call calling Kurt a fag, Kurt intentionally flubbed the high note in the song, giving the solo to Rachel. When he told his dad about it, he told him that, although he really wanted to sing the solo, he loved his dad more than he loved being a star.

According to new rules for competition, the glee club was required to sing a ballad at sectionals. Mr. Schuester had the group pair off after picking names out of a hat, putting Finn and Kurt together to sing ballads to one another. Kurt was very happy with this, due to his long-time crush on Finn, but Finn wasn't as happy; not only did he want to sing to Quinn, not another guy, but he was having trouble even thinking about the assignment due to all the stress he was under. Kurt gave him the idea of instead singing a ballad to his unborn daughter, which Finn happily did. After hearing of Finn's troubles with Quinn, Kurt first suggested that the problem was just with the fact that she was a girl, and all girls were like that; when Finn didn't seem to get the hint, he then suggested that he try and just let the secret out instead of hiding the pregnancy from everyone. Finn was invited over to Quinn's house for dinner, so Kurt helped him go through his father's clothes, since his mother had never thrown them out after he died in war. Kurt shared stories with him of his own mother, who died when he was young. That night at dinner, Finn was nervous about their plan but eventually went through with it, singing "You're Having my Baby" to Quinn in front of her parents, who kicked her out for being pregnant. When he told Kurt the next day, Kurt was sympathetic, admitting that he had known that was a possibility, but Finn was still glad that they didn't have any more secrets. Kurt told Finn that the ballad he was going to sing to him was "I Honestly Love You", but then the group got back together and instead sang "Lean on Me" in support of Finn and Quinn.

Quinn was unhappy with Rachel's appearance, and Kurt was easily persuaded into giving her a makeover. But when he found out that she also had a crush on Finn, and that she hoped this makeover would give her a chance with him, Kurt sabotaged the plan. He found out what Finn liked in girls and instead did the exact opposite with Rachel. When she found out what had happened Rachel confronted Kurt, and realized that he also loved Finn. But both knew that Finn was with Quinn no matter what, and neither really had any chance with him, and, despite their differences, they made up a bit in their rejection.

When it came time for yearbook photos to be taken, the glee club was glad that the club photo wasn't going to be put in. Rachel, however, was desperate for there to be a glee photo in the book and helped convince the principal to allow a picture to be taken. Only two kids could be in the photo, though, and nobody else wanted to participate. Rachel finally convinced Finn to be in the photo with her, but he backed out at the last minute since he didn't want to be teased any more than he already was. Rachel still wanted to implement her ideas, though, and got the club a part in a local mattress commercial. The kids were paid with mattresses, and due to competition rules they were not allowed to accept payment in order to still be eligible. Mr. Schuester had already opened a mattress when he slept at the school due to personal issues, though, but he argued to still have the kids be eligible if he was no longer in charge. The kids were upset at him leaving the club, but stuck together anyway, even in their new (full page, due to Quinn's blackmail) yearbook photo.

With Will no longer in charge of the club, guidance counselor Emma agreed to take the kids to sectionals. After finding out that Puck, not Finn, was the father of Quinn's baby, Finn refused to go with the team and instead a replacement was sent. But when they arrived they were upset to see that they were set to perform last, and even more upset when they found out that the other two clubs were performing all of their songs exactly as they were going to. The team was sure they were going to lose, until Finn arrived with new music. The team pulled through with the song Finn brought, and ended up winning the competition. When the principal was told that it was Coach Sylvester that leaked the performances to the other schools, he fired her and reinstated Will as the director of the glee club. The kids then presented Mr. Schue with the trophy they won, and performed a song just for him, since he missed out on their competition-winning performances.

[Personality]
Kurt comes across as being incredibly confident, sometimes almost to the point of arrogance (going so far as to tell the jocks who pick on him that "one day you will all work for me") He's very outspoken and is never afraid to give his opinion on just about any matter. Even when being thrown in dumpsters he never stands down, still acting as if he's better than the jocks. But most of this confidence is only a bluff; he admits to Mercedes that he really just isn't that confident, and he had never even admitted to anyone that he was gay until he gained a bit more confidence in glee (although it wasn't really a surprise to anyone).

Kurt also can be a bit manipulative at times, if it will help him out (such as using Rachel's makeover as a way to win Finn over). He has no qualms letting people know what he thinks of them, normally with a snide or snarky remark about them (sometimes behind their back).

Kurt is actually rather kind, though. He genuinely cares about those close to him, even going so far as to sacrifice things for them (such as when he gave up the "Defying Gravity" solo out of love for his father). And, despite his arrogant and snarky attitude, he sticks by his fellow glee kids no matter what. Even when he and Mercedes hadn't gotten along he still did what he could to cheer her up, and he still believes in Rachel's talent and ability even when he doesn't like her personality. He even tried helping Finn with his relationship with Quinn (and their unborn daughter), even though that meant that he would have even less of a chance with him (not that there was much chance to begin with). Kurt may not show this more "sensitive" side of himself often, but it's still a very important part of his personality- perhaps even more true to himself than his more arrogant and confident demeanor.

[Specialties/Abilities]
Kurt is a very talented singer. He is a male soprano, and is capable of rivaling even Rachel due to his incredible range. He is also pretty good at dancing, and can play the piano. He also has a good fashion sense, as shown by his designer clothing. He also, somewhat at odds the rest of his personality and interests, is good at repairing cars, and helps his dad out in the shop sometimes.

[Affection] Go ahead and do whatever. Kurt may not reciprocate much, but I don't mind pretty much anything.
[Fighting] For actual killing/serious injury, clear it with me first. Anything more minor as far as fighting/injuring is okay with me, but keep in mind the fact that Kurt is just a normal human and can't really fight back or anything.

[Other Permissions] Just about anything is fine with me. Go ahead and break Kurt's mind as much as you like!
