Completely blew my mind. And history was made. A few highlights that are worth remembering:
10. Sacha Baron Cohen's jokes on the state of the economy and referring to Guy Ritchie as Madonna's assistance whom she had to get rid of due to the recession. Sure it was rude and somewhat crass, but it was FUNNY. Go Sacha. Even saying your name is like swallowing an orange whole without having peeled it first.
9. The commentator mentioning Anna Paquin's Oscar win for The Piano when she was going up to accept the award for Best Actress in a T.V. Series - Drama. Yep, she's pretty much amazing. And Canadian to boot. And her boyfriend is hot.
8. Slumdog Millionaire's total sweep. Okay, I officially need to see this movie now. And Danny Boyle's hair is made of awesome.
7. The obviousness of Wall-E winning Best Animated Feature. I mean, I don't even remember Andrew Stanton's speech, which is funny because I do remember that it was worth remembering. It was really just a "No competition there, no surprise there" kind of thing. It should just mind as well be known as the part during the Golden Globes where Wall-E gets a statue and...yeah, Wall-E gets the statue.
6. The mash-up of Steven Spielberg's movies when he got the honorary award. Holy frigging cow, that guy has done A LOT. Talk about living a ful-filling life, and he's not even retired yet.
5. Christopher Nolan accepting Heath Ledger's award for Best Supporting Actor on behalf of Heath Ledger. It was awesome enough that he won, but the fact that Chris Nolan came up made it even better. It was simple and bittersweet and OMG HEATH LEDGER FOR THE WIN ON THE NIGHT OF FEBRUARY 22ND. If I wasn't sure of it before, I'm sure of it now.
4. Tina Fey's speech when she won Best Actress in a T.V. Series - Comedy. Um, can anybody be any cooler? She is such an inspiration. Like, um, when I get famous and win the Tour de France or whatever, I'm totally going to pull a Tina Fey and tell all the kids who bullied me in the first/third/fifth grade to suck it, punk ass.
3. Sally Hawkins' win for Best Actress - Comedy or Musical. It was a good idea that she put the statue down because otherwise it might have flown out of her hand and hit the head of someone sitting near the stage. She was just THAT nervous and surprised and overwhelmed. And Emma Thompson having to calm her down was just about the cutest thing ever. That on its own reminded me of much I love Emma Thompson and how she truly is the greatest person ever.
2. Darren Aronofsky giving Mickey Rourke the finger. And the television station not censoring it. I think I just died and went to heaven.
1. Kate Winslet, who was the ultimate WIN of the night, taking two, which I don't remember happening to anyone, ever. Her second speech was also hands down the best thing to ever be broadcasted on television. I really need to go through it word for word. So first she swears, like right when they say her name, she's all, "Oh fuck." Then she starts to apologize a million times and it's like KATE, YOU DON'T HAVE TO APOLOGIZE, THIS IS YOUR DAY AND YOU DESERVE TO FREAK OUT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT. Then she names the nominees, and she's like, "Anne, Meryl, Kristin, OH GOD, WHO'S THE OTHER ONE??!!" And the cameras cut to Angelia Jolie. Total PWN. That right there was absolute proof of how fantastic she is, and I have yet to see Revolutionary Road, but I think she deserves the GG just for saying that and outrightly forgetting Angelina. Then she starts thanking her agents, the novelist, the makeup people and I'm still thinking, Wow I can't believe she won a second award for a completely different movie, how does anyone keep track of who worked where? And then she starts to thank the two guys in her life and it's really funny because she addresses DiCaprio first and is close to crying and he's blowing her kisses and is really crying and she's all, "I've loved you for 13 years" and I'm sitting there trying to remember how long ago 1996-1997 really was and that seems to make sense. But then people started interpreting it in a different way and thinking OMG, KATE WINSLET JUST PROPOSED TO LEONARDO DICAPRIO and THIS IS WHAT SAM MENDES GETS FOR CASTING THE TWO OF THEM TOGETHER and HE'S SO GOING TO PUNCH DICAPRIO IN THE FACE DURING THE AFTER PARTY. But yeah, it's not like that, although I did find it funny that she was so overly emotional when addressing him, while her speech to her husband was more calm. And there was the obviousness of her hugging DiCaprio first and Mendes second, which was so much LOL I nearly fell out of my chair. Nevertheless, it was one of the most touching speeches I've ever heard, and I loved it so much I watched it twice. I almost wished I was one of the people being thanked by Kate Winslet.
