[Listenin’ to| Travis "Love Will Come Through"]
Sorry this "recap" is so late, but I've been a busy girl since the taping! Honestly, I don't know what could have made the night better though. Here are some notes I took on the train ride back to CT.
Also here are a few accompanying pics (sorry they're so blurry):
The set (see piano to left),
another of the set,
my ticket.
- discussing 101 dalmations, HL called the animal trainers "racooon wranglers." I think I was the only one that laughed, but it was too cute.
- he also talked generally about training animals and how it was difficult with racoons because they forget things very quickly. "The wranglers would show them what to do and they'd be like 'duhh?' and the wranglers would say [pointing to imaginary racoon] 'You can do this! Come on! You did it yesterday!'" It was also funny considering raccoons are not indigenous to England (where 101 supposedly takes place)
- boxing/small children comment was Hilarious!
- during the q&a, hugh was asked if he had any superstitions or rituals before filming and he said he often makes a "horse braying noise" to release tension. It was the funniest/scariest noise ever, and difficult to explain but I really hope they keep it on the show.
- another ritual that another actor used to do that bugged HL was some guy who would always yell "HIP BATH" several times before starting the scene. He said it would frighten him and throw everyone off.
- when he had his face to face audition for House, he went to Barneys in LA to get a cane (he was serious about this part...) but all they had were umbrellas. So he bought one and, obviously, ended up getting the part. Apparently he ran into the salesman who sold him the umbrella so he told the guy that he had helped him get the part. Can you imagine what this guy feels now??
- wants to play the lead part in Gun Seller!! I've only read half of it so far, but if I had been able to ask a question, it would have been whether he would consider playing the part or not. Glad he answered that for me!
- very nice things he said about the cast. stuff about RSL was cute ("although he wouldn't say the same about me") and JMo ("She's gorgeous. I mean I'm twice her age... god, now I'm getting nervous [crosses legs]").
- answering the Ships question was cute. "If this show goes long enough, I have a feeling he'll end up with all of them." About HW ship: "I think Robert will have something to say about that. But, I'm game." I'm really not a HW shipper but it was still cute.
- while joking about languages and accents, james jokingly said "what, do you want to hear my english accent?" and hugh leans back in his chair, crosses his arms, and says "actually, yes. I would like to hear your English accent." It was clearly a victory for HL, who is always asked to do his American accent.
- Eton rowing song - so cute
- He and Emma Thompson were friendly. Now read that with "friendly" italicized adn that's how he said it. And we're all like "ohh?" and he says "well, we got on really well"... "got on" being italicized. cuuuute.
- hugh & stephen = BFFs. Adorable.
- he never actually graduated from cambridge. apparently all he has left is to sign a few forms and pay some money and take the diploma. He says he'll get to it.
- apparently he learns a lot on the show (house) about the medical cases, but that he forgets EVERYTHING about 5 mins after he does the scene. This is very clear considering the discussion he & james had early in the interview about hugh getting sick and that ended his rowing career. He was sick with mono... but had the hardest time remembering the name of the disease. Hugh, remember how that has been on half a dozen episodes of House? No clearly you don't remember, lol.
- James' famous questions -- good answers (have been posted). Not sure I saw his answer to "what would you like God to say to you when you arrive at the pearly gates?" -- hugh said "No hard feelings."
- a friend asked hugh if he wanted to go and get massages together and hugh could not deal with the whole give money/get pleasure situation (but house can, right?? hehe)
- on road trips when he toured with stephen fry, they used to play a car game where one would start a story (after choosing a genre) and the other would add on to it and they'd go back and forth. I wish I could have been in the car for that!
- HL said taht at 20, stephen fry acted like he was 65. he smoked a pipe and wore a tweed jacket while others (like hugh & emma thompson) were wearing black turtlenecks and smoking cigs. With Hugh as Pres and Emma as VP of Footlights, Hugh said that he could "use" fry in any way he wanted. lol
- really interesting what he said about writing. he has to type stuff because he can't edit handwritten work. He says also that he can write because he's a good reader. he can write something, walk away for 10 mins and come back, read it, and decide what's good and what's bad. I liked the way he described "good writing as a good reader" cuz I think I'm really similar in that way.
- I liked how he talked about how shows change -- it really relies on the audience and how the audience changes or decides what will change. I thought this was really true and interesting.
OK now my ultimate favorite parts:
- the best quick-witted comeback was this: james says "I saw you making this motion [does motion of typing on keyboard]. how do you usually write? longhand? computer?" Hugh: [makes typing motion] on a piano.
- when we took our seats and i realized there was a piano on the set! I almost lost it.
- James asked Hugh to play the piano, and then proceeded to list names of people who have performed on the show, including Elton John, Mick Jagger, and a non-musical Robin Williams. Hugh definitely sunk down in his seat for that.
- Hugh walks over to the piano and says "Oh no! It's locked."
- and the ULTIMATE ULTIMATE was Hugh performing Mystery. It had special meaning for me and my friend, who had first discovered Mystery on YouTube while writing our Senior Theses. This was right around the time we both started getting obsessed with Hugh/House. It was on my playlist to listen to on teh way down to NY... we listen to it and sing it all the time. I definitely lost it at that point.
Honestly the night could not have been any better. I was so pleased and feel so lucky that I had the opportunity to see it. If you are looking for more details/specifics, reply to this post and I will elaborate to the best of my memory. :)
