accident

So today I got into my first car accident. I'm ok and the other driver is ok too. Technically, it was a fender bender, but we were so lucky it wasn't worse. I was trying to turn around cuz I missed my turn, so I did a U-turn where I shouldn't have... as I pulled out onto Main St in Westport, I either didn't see the car coming because the sun was in my eyes, or the curve was too sharp there for me to see the car anyway. So she caught the front end of my car and it ripped off the front bumper and smashed the right turn signal. Apparently, all she got was a flat tire, which is just unbelievable to me; that's something I really need to check out on the police report because I wasn't able to physically look at her car at the time. Anyway, this girl is about my age and she's a Swedish au pair working in Weston. Needless to say it wasn't her car--it belongs to the family. Even worse news: She doesn't even have a driver's license!!! I found this out just before I left with the tow truck and it totally blew me away. Apparently she didn't know she needed one. How insane is that? So it's a really interesting situation. I was at fault because I shouldn't have turned around there, but not having a license is kind of a bigger deal. So if the family tries to get me to pay anything, they've got another thing coming. Some people I've talked to say I can sue (although I'd HIGHLY prefer not to, especially since I'm not hurt and the damage isn't as bad as it could have been). I got a ticket for the U-turn, which was $103, but I don't even care... I'm just glad we're both ok.

So it's been a really stressful afternoon/evening. Mike is going to ask his grandfather to look at my car and suggest where to take it & give me a good idea of an estimate. I'm not even going to discuss this situation with the girl or the family that owns the car until I get the police report. I have a feeling though, if they're anything like most Weston/Westport people, that they will throw a big snobby hissyfit. But they'll regret it if they do, that's for damn sure.

Honestly, I'm feeling pretty positive about it. Considering how hard she hit me (my car spun completely around into the other lane of traffic), we were so lucky. And for a first accident, I'm glad it wasn't worse. Good news is that my family didn't get angry or upset about it and were really sweet to me when I got there. And my mom and brother are coming over tomorrow for a while.

Ugh, I'm sore. Not enough to worry about. But I need some sleep.
